Soil Science Student Awards

 

The Les Lavkulich Graduate Student Award in Soil Science (one award of $5000) and the Art Bomke Undergraduate Student Award in Soil

Science (one award of $3000) will be awarded to students on the basis of academic achievement, research proposal (for graduate students), leadership/community service, and letters of recommendation.
The application deadline is April 1, 2023.

Warkentin Prize

Every year, the PRSSS accepts nominations and applications for the Warkentin Prize, in recognition of Dr. Benno P. Warkentin. The Warkentin Prize of $750 will be awarded to a student or recent graduate that has published a peer-reviewed article or thesis in the field of soil science. See application guidelines here.

Application deadline: May 31, 2023.

Revolutionizing the Dairy Industry with Sustainable Plant- Based Alternatives

Vanita Gurnani is a successful entrepreneur and innovator who has co-founded three vegan companies across India, the USA, and Canada. One of her notable ventures is Plant Veda, a Vancouver-based plant-based dairy company. Her expertise in product development has led to the creation of multiple award-winning products.

In addition to her business acumen, Vanita holds double masters in Computer Science and Home Science. As a mother of three vegan kids, she is passionate about promoting plant-based living and sustainable practices

Sunny Gurnani is a vegan entrepreneur and co-founder of Plant Veda, a plant-based dairy company located in Vancouver, Canada.  After working as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, he made the shift to the vegan industry. With his expertise, Sunny helped launch several award-winning vegan products and has conducted various seminars to educate people on the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, including reversing heart disease and diabetes.

Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and is certified in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell. As a father of three vegan children, Sunny is committed to promoting a sustainable and healthy lifestyle through his work.

Talk summary:

Coastal wetlands are among the most valuable and threatened ecosystems across the globe. Given their declining status, significant effort has been devoted to their conservation and restoration. However, most efforts fail to meet stated goals because of an emphasis on practices rooted in an incomplete ecological understanding of these ecosystems. Due to traditional restoration approaches, a knowledge gap exists in our current understanding of the factors that maintain the health and functioning of coastal wetlands. Further, conservation practices that aim to protect ecosystems often fail to consider local values, knowledge systems, and needs, an oversight which can cause conflict and impact conservation outcomes. In this talk, I will share research that aims to fill in our ecological knowledge gaps and promote the inclusion of cultural values and community-centered conservation interventions.

Dr. Alex Moore, Assistant Professor, UBC Faculty of Forestry

Bio:

My name is Alex Moore (they/them), and I am an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. I completed my PhD at the Yale School of the Environment where my research focused on how predator-prey interactions impact the health and functioning of wetland ecosystems. At UBC, I am expanding upon on this work by branching out into new wetland ecosystems while exploring the cultural implications of habitat restoration and conservation. Through this work, I hope to engage in the co-creation of knowledge and sustainable solutions with local communities most directly impacted by conservation practice and policies.
