Your Kitchen Garden in Canby, Oregon is an 11-acre diversified vegetable operation selling exclusively to restaurants in Portland, Oregon.  The farm has operated for over 21 years and has an excellent reputation.  We are one of the pioneers of this type of marketing in one of the most vibrant farm-to-table scenes in the country.  Positions available include a farm manager and a harvesting/packing/field hand.

Candidates for manager will have at least 2 years experience working in small-scale vegetable production and direct marketing.  Knowledge of tractor operation/maintenance and irrigation systems is required.   Duties will include assisting in field production, irrigation, coordination of crews, maintaining production and harvest schedules, and greenhouse growing and propagation.  Attention to detail and a commitment to quality product are essential. Initially, candidate will be assisting established manager in day-to-day operations and receive hands-on education of systems in place.  Current manager is owner/establisher of farm, and has a PhD. in Botany from The University of British Columbia.  The educational opportunity for the right candidate is something that comes along very rarely.  Compensation for this position depends on education and experience.  Hours may be irregular and extended and may be supplemented at times with an assistant under candidate’s supervision.  This is a year-round position.

Harvesting/packing/field hand will understand the importance of quality control in marketing of vegetables to a demanding restaurant clientele. Duties include coordinating harvest on a day-to-day basis to fill current orders, rinsing and boxing product and liaising with manager on inventory/availability.  This position also includes field work such as planting, cultivation and harvesting of vegetables and placement of irrigation pipes. Candidates will be able to lift 50lb and work outside for extended hours in varying conditions.  Transportation is required as the farm is not served by public transportation. Pay starts at $12.50/hr but may depend on experience.  Season is April/May-October/November.

These positions offer excellent opportunities for the right people to build knowledge and experience in an established, successful farming environment.  Our current team of 5 workers have a combined 80 years of experience operating this farm.  We harvest and sell February through December.  Join our team and see how we make farming a profitable operation.

We are accepting applications now for this year.  Inquiries for next year (2018) are also being accepted throughout 2017.  Please send your contact info, previous experience/education and any references to ykg@canby.com.  Thank you.

The UBC Future of Food Global Dialogue Series is a campus-wide initiative bringing together food security and sustainability experts from across the university and North America to regularly engage the UBC community and the public around the Global Food System, including topics such as climate change, food security, biodiversity, social justice, culture, and policy. The series uses various formats to foster discussion, such as dialogue circles, seminars, panel discussions, performances, photo exhibitions, and film screenings.

The series is jointly convened by the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, the Liu Institute for Global Issues, and UBC Reads Sustainability, an initiative of UBC Sustainability. We invite you to consider collaborating with us or to suggest ideas for topics and speakers. If your team is planning to host speakers next year who may be a fit for our series, we would love to hear from you.

Please check back for new updates on dates, locations, and events for our series. #UBCFutureofFood
