Traditional Fulbright Canada Student Awards

Traditional Fulbright Canada Student awards are intended for Canadian citizens who are graduate students, prospective graduate students, or promising young professionals who wish to study and/or conduct research in the United States. Awards may be held at any university, research centre, think tank, or government agency in the United States.

Canadian students can take up the award in one of three ways:

1.    Formal enrolment awards are intended for students who plan to enroll in a graduate program at an American university. The student must seek admission at the same time as they apply for a Fulbright award. The Traditional Fulbright Canada award would support the first nine months of the student’s graduate degree.

2.    Research awards are intended for students enrolled in a graduate program at a Canadian university, and who wish to conduct research in the United States that will support their Canadian degree. The Traditional Fulbright Canada award would support the student’s nine month academic year in the United States.

3.    Independent research awards are intended for researchers who have completed an undergraduate degree or a master’s degree at a Canadian university and who wish to pursue one academic year of independent research in the United States.

BPI Rising Star Awards

The BioProducts Institute (BPI) has just announced the inaugural BPI – Rising Star Awards aimed at encouraging women and Indigenous members of the UBC community to engage in bioproducts research. A total of five awards are offered to students and postdoctoral fellows from all science and engineering disciplines at UBC.

·        Two BPI Rising Star Undergraduate Awards valued at $1,000

·        Two BPI Rising Star Graduate Awards valued at $1,500

·        One BPI Rising Star Postdoctoral Award valued at $5,000

Applications are now open to the Liu Scholars program. Current UBC doctoral students in any year from any discipline are invited to apply.

The Liu Scholars program was first established in 2009 and seeks to bring together exceptional UBC PhD students who are interested in using their research and disciplinary expertise to work on public policy and global issues. Positioned within the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA), students admitted to the Liu Scholars program will be integrated into the network of faculty, research, and community engagement activities that exists within the school.

The model of the Liu Scholar program has changed this year and now, to apply to the Liu Scholar program, propose a project with a definite output (ie. a paper, op-ed, gallery exhibition) to be carried out in collaboration with, or under the mentorship of, a faculty member who is not currently your supervisor. Proposed projects should explicitly demonstrate relevance to public policy and global issues. Once accepted, you will be designated a Liu Scholar for one year. Upon production of the output at the end of the year, the scholar will receive $2000.

VOLUNTEER STUDENT INTERNSHIP – ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (ESAC)

The Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) is looking for Volunteer Student Intern. The internship involves two main tasks: 1) Supporting with ESAC communications and member outreach; and 2) Assisting with the coordination of ESAC’s Annual Conference to be held at UBC in early June 2019. The internship will be held between November 2018 and June 2019 (total of approximately 135 hours).

The selected candidate will be awarded an honorarium of $2,000 to be offered upon the successful culmination of duties (see document attached for more details).

About the Speaker:

Elizabeth Edinger joined the Allard School of Law in 1978 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1987. Professor Edinger served as Associate Dean from 1988-1992 and from 1997-2003. Her teaching areas include Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law and Creditors Remedies. She has published in each of these areas.

NEW BC Institute of Agrologists Scholarships

Agrologists!  Do you know a student attending a BC post-secondary agrology-related program?

To support future agrologists in achieving their career in agrology, the BC Institute of Agrologists will award up to two $1500 scholarships annually.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Scholarship applicants must be:

• enrolled in a degree program in a recognized British Columbia post-secondary institute
• enrolled in 3rd or 4th undergraduate degree program or a post-graduate (Masters) program
• full-time or part-time (no fewer than 2 courses)
• enrolled in a program of study related to agrology
• a student member or member of BCIA  (Complete student member application at https://www.bcia.com/members/student-membership )
• Canadian or permanent resident of Canada
• B+ average academic achievement in previous 2 years(minimum of 15 courses) of post-secondary degree studies

Applicants must provide a 300 to 500 word essay on the topic “What is Agrology in British Columbia?”  The essay should demonstrate an understanding of agrology in the province of BC and provide support for the ideas expressed.  All applicants must first be accepted as a member or student member of BCIA before submitting their application. Scholarship recipients may have their photo and essay published in BC Institute of Agrologists promotional materials.

The deadline for applications is October 15, 2018.  The BCIA Communications Committee will review eligible applications based on the essay submission.  The scholarships will be awarded by Dec. 1, 2018.  Questions may be sent to bcia-scholarships@email.bcia.com

NOTE: Scholarship applications must include official unopened transcripts and be mailed to BC Institute of Agrologists,  2777 Claude Road, Victoria, BC  V9B 3T7 and post-marked no later than Oct. 15, 2018.
