Scientific Methods and Research Techniques (SMaRT) Program – Pod Leader Recruitment

Standard

The SMaRT program is a joint-initiative between Let’s Talk Science and UBC Community Learning Initiative (CLI). Our aim is to enrich the scientific knowledge of Grade 5-7 elementary school students in East Vancouver schools by taking the lead on facilitating fun and engaging science experiments that complement their grade-specific science curriculums

This year we will be offering the program to 18 classrooms – as such, we have space for 18 pod leaders. Each pod visits the same classroom 4 TIMES throughout Jan-Apr 2019 and consists of one pod leader (grad student/post doc) + 3-5 pod members (undergrads).

We are currently looking to recruit graduate students or post-docsas pod leaders.

What will you do as a pod leader?
Term 1: Attend 1 orientation/training session where you will meet your pod members (3-5 undergraduate students).

Term 2: Schedule class visits with the teacher. Support and offer guidance to your pod in planning & leading classroom visits with the help of a manual that outlines the experiments that your pod members will facilitate. Oversee the delivery of four 1.5-hour activities to a Grade 5-7 class by your pod members.

*Mandatory Training Session!*
SMaRT Training: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 24TH 10:00AM – 12:00PM

Location: UBC campus – specific location to be determined

+ BREAKFAST PROVIDED!

Please note that the classroom visit time is a regular time slot and could be Mon-Fri between 9-10:30am, 10:30am-12pm, or 1-2:30pm. Your visit time will be on the same day of the week and at the same time of the day for each of the 4 sessions. These time slots are the actual time you will spend in class, they do NOT include travel to and from the school (budget for an hour max), 10-15 mins preparation before your visit, or clean-up after your visit.

*Register here!*

Job Poster – Research Scientists – Growing Agricultural Innovation

Standard

I would like to bring to your attention an exciting opportunity related to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada`s (AAFC) future capacity needs to grow Canadian agriculture science and innovation.

On September 21, 2018,  Minister MacAuley announced a transformational Government of Canada investment of $70 million in agricultural discovery science and innovation. As part of this investment, over $44 million will be dedicated to hiring and equipping approximately 75 scientists and science professionals across the country over the next five years.

AAFC recently launched its first job poster aimed at recruiting approximately 40 research scientists in emerging fields such as, agro-ecology, artificial intelligence, the various-omics (genomics, phenomics, epigenetics, etc), and clean technologies. The recruitment for these positions will continue over the next 24 months or so.

Your institutions provide a key source of highly qualified personnel that we would like to tap into. As such, I would appreciate if you could help us promote this opportunity by sharing this job poster:  Research Scientists – Growing Agricultural Innovation and encouraging potential candidates to visit our recruitment booths at various career fairs and other university events across the country.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank your organisations for helping us, through our on-going dialogue,  shape the vision for AAFC science and the types of professionals that we would need to support a progressive and sustainable agricultural sector in Canada.

Regards,

Gilles

The Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Diversity and Inclusion was struck last spring to examine and report back to the UBC Vancouver Senate on the current academic environment and its impact on student and faculty diversity and inclusion. It works to develop a framework for incorporating considerations of diversity and inclusion into academic decision making; and where appropriate provide recommendations to changes in Senate policies to better support students and faculty in fulfilling their full potential.
