Food in Space Event

The MacMillan Space Centre will be hosting a range of space events for the public and Let’s Talk Science will be hosting a booth on March 19 and 20th at their event to demonstrate to the public how food is grown in space. We will even be giving out tomato seeds that were harvested in the International Space Station! Join us at the Food in Space event to help demonstrate to people how we grow food in zero gravity.

Uhill Elementary BBQ

Join UBCLTS and University Hill Elementary for the Annual uHill Elementary Earth Day BBQ! The Earth DayBBQ is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the environment. We are looking for 4-6 volunteers to run some fun, crowd pleasing activities, including Edible DNA, H2Woah, and Smell your way Home for students and their families. Materials and training will be provided and volunteers will be provided with delicious barbecue!

Highlands EcoFEST

Highlands Elementary is running a full day event to promote Earth Day and teach students about environmental issues. They have partnered up with Let’s Talk Science to bring workshops to their classroom about issues such as overfishing (Activity: Salmon Jenga). We are looking for volunteers to help run hands-on workshops for students. Multi-shifts will be available. Sign up for your preferred shifts. There are 8 available workshops, please sign up for at least 2.

PART-TIME GRADUATE COHORT PROGRAM

MEd in Education for Sustainability (EFS2)

Engage in Real-World Sustainability Projects

Begins: August 2018
Delivery: Face-to-face, UBC & CityStudio Vancouver

Application Deadline: March 30, 2018 

This innovative MEd cohort program will engage participants in real-world projects enmeshed in questions of learning and scholarship. 

This partnership program features an Adaptive Education model, which builds a pedagogical bridge that ties the project and classroom to the community. Participants will consult on, experiment with, and co-create solutions that address problems which come to light in the course of working with the City of Vancouver on sustainability priorities.

The unique structure of this program includes a body of advisers and experts that support classroom-based research projects and instructors who act as research designers to facilitate group projects with real-world outcomes. Participants will:

§  develop a critical awareness of the concepts of education and sustainability, how they relate, and their implications;

§  demonstrate their learning throughout the program, thereby increasing their employability;

§  build their abilities to work with governments and other partners by collaborating with city staff on sustainability policies;

§  embody the knowledge and skills associated with community building, political engagement, social movement participation, real-world research, design, dialogue, network building, and knowledge dissemination.

The topic of her presentation is Environmental Markets and Compliance Trading:

  • Cap and Trade
  • Carbon Offsets
  • Low Carbon Fuel Standards
  • US Renewable Fuels Standard and RIN trading

About the Speaker:

Chelsea Erhardt works with the compliance trading team at Elbow River Marketing. Chelsea is passionate about environmental markets and has spent the bulk of her career focused on North American carbon offsets. Recently she joined Elbow River and has helped the company manage its exposure to cap-and-trade markets, low carbon fuel standards, and renewable fuel obligations across North America. The team looks forward to continuing to demonstrate success in compliance trading and further growing its already diverse proprietary trading portfolio of RINs, carbon and LCFS credits. Chelsea holds a Master of Science in Environmental Economics from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK.

Waitlist Registration is now OPEN for May 5, 12, 13 2018 Grad ISW

Waitlist registration is now open for the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) May 5, 12, 13 2018.  The ISW is a 3-day intensive workshop that develops participant’s teaching skills and confidence.  It is appropriate for first time teachers or those with years of experience.  Join the thousands of students who have taken this workshop. The ISW is an internationally recognized program and students receive transcript notation for their participation. In addition, graduate students in STEM departments are eligible to become CIRTL associates upon completion of the workshop.    

IMPORTANT: The workshop runs from 8:15am-5:00pm. Please note you must attend all three days for the complete duration of the workshop, i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop.  Please find attached the policy for registering in an ISW and an FAQ sheet.
