Orientation events and info sessions for graduate students starting their program in January

Pre-Arrival Info Sessions for international students

International Student Advising is hosting an online pre-arrival info session for international students. These sessions are particularly helpful for your newly admitted international students starting their programs in January but all are welcomed. This session will be offered twice:

  • Monday, November 25, 2019, 9am – 10:15am REGISTER
  • Thursday, December 5, 2019, 3pm – 4:15pm REGISTER

International Student Advisors will cover topics such as key immigration documents (passports, study permits, TRVs/eTAs) work authorization for international students, and health insurance (iMED, MSP, extended health).

GSS social events

The GSS is hosting a variety of events including MOA tours, a pancake breakfast, and a speed friending social. For details and to register, please visit the Events page on the Orientation website.

LFS Grad Students Win Awards at Soil Science Conference

Two graduate students in soil science program won awards for their oral presentations at the 2019 ASA-CSSA-SSSA International conference in San Antonio, TX:

  • Kiran Padda (PhD student with Dr. Chris Chanway) won the 1st place award in the Soils in Ecological Restoration session
  • Chantel Chizen (MSc student with Dr. Maja Krzic) won the 3rd place award in the Soil C and GHG Emissions session

Both Kiran and Chantel also won travel awards from the Canadian Society of Soil Science to attend this conference. Well done!

MFRE Speaker Series: Tegan Adams, CEO of BC New Maple Holdings

This week’s guest for the MFRE Speaker Series is Tegan Adams, CEO of New Maple Holdings.

Topic: The Cannabis Industry – One year after legalization

Tegan’s career began in 2014 as a management consultant in the cannabis industry for public companies new to listing on the exchanges in Canada. Later, Tegan was hired in a Direction/Management role at Eurofins Scientific, a Health Canada accredited lab, for Marketing/Sales. As CEO with New Maple Holdings Tegan helps oversee finance and operations for more than 1.5M ft2 production space of medical-grade cannabis. Tegan attended UBC where she earned a BSc degree in Global Resource Systems and a MSc in Agricultural Economics. 

In this talk, Tegan will provide an overview of the first year after the legalization of cannabis, the current state of the industry, the business opportunities, the challenges, and more.
