About the Speaker:

Ian helped set up the Ministry’s climate action team in 2008, and has led the team and the climate change file since 2012. In 2013 he worked with the B.C. Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative to develop, launch, and implement an industry-led climate change adaptation program funded with $6 million over 5 years (now renewed to 2023). Before joining the Ministry, Ian’s career included working on tax and economic policy with the Saskatchewan Finance Ministry, doing economic evaluations on international oil and gas projects with a major Canadian energy company, supporting the B.C. Chief Forester to make allowable annual cut determinations, and providing socio-economic and environmental assessments for strategic land use plans in Central Coast, North Coast, Sea-to-Sky, Haida Gwaii, Lillooet, Morice, and elsewhere in B.C.

ADAPTATION CONCEPTS AND INITIATIVES

In this second module, you will extend your knowledge of the impacts of climate change on the BC agriculture sector, and explore considerations surrounding both regional and farm scale adaptation. MacNair will also outline the importance of collaboration in identifying and implementing adaptation strategies, and will use case study examples to highlight current work being done in the province to support adaptation in the BC agriculture sector. During the session, we will access to the Slido platform to facilitate questions and undertake interactive polls; please bring a smartphone or laptop with you. The Education Series is a joint endeavor with the BC Agricultural Climate Adaptation Research Network (ACARN) and the BC Ministry of Agriculture, and is hosted in collaboration with six education institutions across the province –UBC Vancouver & Okanagan; UNBC Prince George & Terrace; KPU Richmond; TRU Kamloops; NLC Fort St. John; UFV Abbotsford.

Global Seminar for Graduate Students

Go Global Okanagan is trying to reach a larger pool of graduate students for a Global Seminar Program run out of our Okanagan campus with a focus around sustainability. The seminar will run from Sept 5 – 14, 2018 and will have students go to Kluane Lake in the Yukon to explore, in short, how historical and contemporary interactions between humans and the environment have shaped the present landscape.

Our hope is that you will be able to promote this opportunity to students through e-mail communication more effectively than we are able to. Students can reference our webpage for further information. If you would like any further information to assist in any promotions, please do not hesitate to ask. The deadline to apply is May 12, 2019 and we hope to have a mix of students from the Okanagan and Vancouver! Last year we had 6 students, 3 from O and 3 from V, who all spoke very highly of their experience taking part in this program.

“Using the Kluane Lake region, Yukon Territory as our study area, you will be exploring how historical and contemporary interactions between humans and the environment have shaped the present landscape. You will also explore how environmental and social drivers of change shape the landscape over scales of space and time, and discuss future resilience and vulnerability in this context. The field component of the course will cover present-day perspectives and visions of the landscape and use by different groups, as well as historical and contemporary natural resource management governance systems & approaches by First Nations, Parks Canada, and the territorial government.
