Talk summary:

This talk will detail ongoing research on Western Sandpipers and their reliance on essential nutrients available on intertidal biofilm, a thin layer of microalgae and other organisms found on surface sediments of intertidal mudflats.  It will cover a bit of what life is like working as a research scientist for the Canadian federal government, and the interface between science and policy on conservation and development in one of Canada’s busiest working estuaries.

Dr. Mark Drever, Research Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada

Bio:

Dr. Mark Drever is a research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) working on ecology and conservation of coastal birds. He received his PhD from the University of Guelph in 2005 and worked as an NSERC postdoctoral fellow with Kathy Martin in the Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences at UBC.  Since signing on to ECCC in 2010, he has developed a research program on sandpipers using estuaries as migratory stopovers, including their foraging on intertidal microalgae. This program involves shorebird tracking, chemical analyses, and drone technology to look at how coastal mudflats provide essential nutrients for long-distance migration of shorebirds.

See you on Thursday in the Beaty Museum Allan Yap Theatre!

Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) May 11, 12 & 19, 2024 Application Opens March 29!

Standard

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) will be offering a Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) on May 11, 12 & 19, 2024.

The Grad ISW is a 24-hour, fully participatory, and peer-based professional development workshop for graduate students that is beneficial to both new and experienced instructors.

Please note: You must attend all sessions and complete all independent work for the complete duration of the workshop, (i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop).

To apply for the waitlist for May 11, 12 & 19, 2024 ISW click here: https://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/graduate-instructional-skills-workshop-may-11-12-19-2024-preliminary-application-2/

Application opens on March 29 at 9 am and closes on May 8 at 4:30 pm. By clicking this link, you are applying for the WAITLIST only and this DOES NOT register you for the workshop. Graduate ISWs at UBC are in high demand. To create an equitable registration process all graduate students who apply for an ISW will first be enrolled on a waitlist, from which participants are randomly selected. If a participant has applied for more than one ISW waitlist, their name will appear more frequently when generating the participant list, giving them a higher chance of being selected for an ISW. If you are accepted into the workshop, you will be contacted by our office to confirm your registration. For more information and a list of all upcoming sessions visit: http://ctlt.ubc.ca/gradisw

Workshop Eligibility:

Please read the application process and workshop eligibility prior to applying.

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is eligible if they are:

  • a full-time or part-time registered graduate student at UBC during the academic term when the ISW is offered
    • Winter Session Term 1 (September-December), Term 2 (January-April); Summer Session Term 1 (May-June), Term 2 (July-August)
  • a graduate student at UBC who has completed degree requirements but has not yet convocated
  • a joint degree graduate student who is enrolled at UBC and another institution
  • a graduate student at UBC pursuing non-degree studies
  • a visiting graduate student that is eligible to take courses

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is not eligible if they are:

  • not a graduate student at UBC
  • a graduate student at UBC who has on-leave status
  • a visiting graduate student that is not eligible to take courses

Upcoming Events (April 16 and 18) from the Climate Solutions Research Collective

Standard
Project Pitch Event April 16, 2024, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm | Michael Smith Labs and on Zoom
This past spring, the Collective solicited ideas from the research community for projects that could be completed by the next round of Solutions Scholars.  After a successful call, eight projects have advanced to a pitch session which will be open to the UBC community.

Similar to an “accelerator” style event, teams of applicants pitch their projects to a panel of judges and others from the climate research community at UBC. Each applicant team will have five minutes to present their project, followed by five to seven minutes of questions. Questions from the audience will be collected through Slido and may be used by the panel during the pitch session.  This isn’t Shark Tank: the objective is to help each team realize their goals, regardless of whether their project is selected for the program.

This event is open to everyone interested in climate research at UBC.  We invite the UBC community to come together in the spirit of collaboration and the goal of advancing climate solutions through research.

Solutions Scholar Summit April 18, 2024, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm  |  St. John’s College UBCV

From adaptation and mitigation to education, the 2023/24 Solutions Scholars have been exploring climate solutions related to urban environments, extreme heat, and fires.

Come hear their research updates and join table discussions to advance the dialogue.

In the first hour, this year’s cohort will share updates of their projects; in the second hour, each scholar will host a table to facilitate smaller group discussion around the topic of their research.  This is an opportunity to learn from one another, as well as provide feedback to the scholars who will be completing their projects over the following four months.

Refreshments Provided.
