Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years.

UBC Vanier application deadline: 12 noon (PT – Vancouver time) on Thursday, August 29 2024
Graduate program nomination deadline: 4:00 pm PT on Tuesday, September 17 2024

Note: Per changes to Tri-Agency award values announced in June 2024, the Vanier CGS program is expected to continue under its current parameters of $50,000 per year for this competition year. Further information on the future of the program will be shared as it becomes available.

Dr. Mark Paul Selda Rivarez (July 10-11)

Mark Paul Rivarez obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in Laguna, Philippines. He started his research abroad with a pre-doctoral research at the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology, CSIC, University of Valencia in Spain. He then joined the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology of the National Institute of Biology in Slovenia as a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie fellow for his doctoral studies. After finishing his doctorate in 2022, Dr. Rivarez became a Balik Scientist Fellow under the Department of Science and Technology in the Philippines and took up a postdoctoral researcher position at North Carolina State University in the USA in 2023. As a Balik Scientist, he is currently doing virology, metagenomics, and bioinformatics research with his colleagues at Caraga State University and at the Philippine Genome Center.
