Lenses of Sustainability is a campus-wide, student-led dialogue series designed to bring students, faculty, staff, and community together to re-imagine sustainability, gain wider perspectives on pressing issues, and discuss opportunities to make an impact towards a more sustainable future.

This dialogue series aims to foster a sense of community at UBC by bringing together a diverse audience, creating a space for cross-faculty conversations and interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating a shared understanding of pressing societal issues.

Join us for complimentary tea-tasting, story-telling, interactive discussions, and a delicious catered dinner.

Registration is required, space is limited to 60 participants. Registration is free.

This event is wheel-cheer accessible, the meal will have vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options.

Our series comprises three dialogues over the 2015-2016 Academic Year:

  • Local Food: October 7th at the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability
  • Happiness: November 4th at the Student Nest
  • Sense of Place: January 20th at the UBC Longhouse

This dialogue series aims to foster a sense of community and sustainability at UBC by bringing a diverse audience together through cross-faculty conversation and creating space for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Language Proficiency Index

Academic English Support Program

  • If your reading, writing, note-taking or pronunciation skills are holding you back from fully participating in class consider getting some help from the Academic English Support Program. It is open to all students, and is completely free!

Tandem Language Learning Program

  • If you are looking to practice your English skills, or any other language, consider joining the Tandem Language Learning Program. The program matches two people, who are interested in learning or improving in the native language of their program partner. If you are looking to improve your English language skills, you would be paired with a fluent English speaker who is interested in learning or practicing your native language.

English Corner @ UBC

  • Meet other UBC students from around the world and help build your language skills together with weekly meetings and social outings for all those involved.
  • The English Corner meets every Wednesday from 5-7PM in the AMS Nest’s room 2514 or 2515, located directly above Pie R Squared Pizza.

UBC Writing Centre

  • Need to improve your writing skills? The UBC Writing Centre offers free writing support for all UBC students. Meet with tutors for feedback, to get questions answered, or just to brainstorm.

English Language Institute

  • The English Language Institute (ELI) offers 16-week and 8-week English language programs with start dates throughout the year. The ELI also offers an ‘English for the Global Citizen’ program and an ‘English for Business Communications’ program with varying start dates. Do you know a great teacher? Call for Nominations – Killam Teaching Prize

This is your chance to identify a professor, instructor or lecturer in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems who has inspired you!

LFS awards Killam Teaching Prizes every second academic year to acknowledge outstanding contributions made by teaching faculty in LFS. Nominations may be made by students, alumni or faculty.

Among the criteria taken into consideration are sustained teaching excellence, the ability to motivate students and stimulate critical thinking, and development of innovative approaches to teaching methodology and curricula.

Nominations are made by a letter of nomination from students, alumni and/or faculty and should be submitted to: Melanie Train melanie.train@ubc.ca

The nomination letter must include reasons for nominating this candidate, and one or more examples of her/his excellent teaching practice. Nominations for the 2016 prize must be received by October 11, 2015.

Research Experience Program 2015 – register by Oct 2, 2015

Interested in research, but don’t know where to start? Become a mentee with Undergraduate Research Opportunities (URO). URO runs the Research Experience Program (REX) during the UBC school year from September until March, with the aim of encouraging and facilitating undergraduate students into research. Mentees will be paired up with mentors who are experts in their field of study (PhDs, Masters, PostDocs, etc). You will then work closely with your group of mentees and mentor in order to tackle research problems and to gain valuable research experience. URO is currently looking for enthusiastic mentees who are interested in developing a theoretical research project which they will present as a poster at the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC). LFS|US Feeding 9 Billion Challenge, Oct 17/18 – register by Oct 2, 2015

LFS|US is hosting its first-ever Feeding 9 Billion Challenge on October 17th and 18th! This competition gives students 18 hours to come up with creative new projects!
There will be cash prizes for winners, exciting door prizes plus the opportunity to network with other students and experts in the field of sustainable food systems and social entrepreneurship. The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems and the UBC Farm will serve as a “living laboratory” for students to test out their environmentally, economically and socially sustainable solutions to food systems issues. EVERYONE is welcome! Students  will be grouped into interdisciplinary team or students can register in pairs or in groups; however if you choose to do this please ensure that AT LEAST 2 faculties are represented!
