Mathematics and sustainability

My blog has been dormant for almost a month. There are a few reasons for it, but it certainly doesn’t mean I didn’t have anything interesting to write about. One of the most interesting things that happened last month was the presentation on sustainability by Prof. Albert Allen Bartlett. The presentation was excellent and you can listen to it online. However, what struck me was not the presentation but our attitude that we can do research on sustainability and educate other people without being able to understand basic mathematics behind it. I have been thinking a lot about it and the more I do, the more I think that every educator must have basic understanding of mathematics. How else, can she or he interpret the information we are supposed to be able to share with our students? I would strongly recommend any educator to listen to Prof. Bartlett presentation and do this math for yourself. Sometimes numbers are worth thousands of words. I think THIS IS the case.
