EuroScienceFun 2016 Conference in Reykjavik

IMG_9281

Ævar Þór Benediktsson – an Icelandic actor, writer and a popularizer of science. And most importantly he is a very nice and modest person!

I have had an incredible opportunity to meet with the European Colleagues who are engaged in science outreach. This was a European – EuroScienceFun 2016 conference and it took place in Reykjavik Iceland. I didn’t know much about Iceland before coming and I knew very little about how Europeans are engaged in science outreach. I only somewhat knew what was going on on Israel as I have been very active in mathematics and science outreach 20 years ago… So this conference was a very exciting opportunity for me. However, in addition to meeting very inspiring people I also was very surprised by how much our Icelandic colleagues do in science outreach. After all Iceland is 100 times smaller than Canada in terms of its population. It is a small country of only 325,000 people. And yet, they organize amazing science outreach events. Moreover, it feels as thanks to the country’s size they do things much more effectively and efficiently. I was very impressed by that. Just to think that almost 700 people attended our science show (when the city of Reykjavik has about 200,000 inhabitants), this is just huge.

At the same time I realized that we do a lot of very exciting things here in Canada. I felt proud of our mathematics and science outreach and how we engage future teachers in it. So it was a very inspiring conference for me.
