I am a first-year student in the Master of Arts School and Applied Child Psychology program. I am still figuring out what I want to do after I am done my degree and am considering all options! After becoming a registered psychologist, I will probably find a job working for a school district or work in private practice. I would eventually like to return to university and teach future school psychology students. I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and spent most of my childhood there. When I was 13, I moved to Shanghai, China where I completed high school. I moved back to Canada and did my undergrad in psychology at the University of Victoria. I have always been interested in both education and psychology. When I started my undergrad, I was originally planning to go into education to become a teacher. However, after taking some psychology courses as electives I fell in love with the field. I did not know about school psychology at the time, so I planned to go into clinical or counselling psychology. When I heard about school psychology it seemed like the perfect fit to merge my love of education with my love for psychology, so I decided to apply for graduate school! I love that our program includes classwork, research, and a practicum. This is one thing that really drew me to the program at UBC. I also love the supportive community of students in our program. We all work together and help each other out whenever we can. In my spare time (and when I have spare money) I love to try new restaurants! Some advice I have for new grad students would be to remember that if you are in grad school it’s because you have worked hard and you deserve to be here, so don’t doubt yourself! Be organized and create systems for yourself to organize your time, due dates, readings, and self-care time. I use Google Calendar and Excel to plan my life. Notion and OneNote are some other great apps. Connect with senior students to give you tips on how to succeed, build strong relationships with your cohort and lean on them when you need support. Regularly back up your computer on a hard drive. Getting enough sleep is a superpower. Remember your ‘why’ (why are you here, why is this important to you?). And finally, just do your best! The rest will fall into place.
