Re-thinking Our Perspective on Stress

It felt like just yesterday that a new semester has begun the anticipation to start another new chapter of experiences and to bring us one more step closer to our goals and ambitions.  Notes were taken during lectures, assignments were written and handed-in, and mid-terms were studied for and completed.  New faces were encountered, occasions were sought for and attended, and familiar and unexplored spaces were discovered on campus on a regular basis.

With the days that go by as we work through the schedules that we have grown accustomed to, it is sometimes almost surprising to wrap our heads around the fact that another three months have already flown by.   Whether you have realized it not, we are headed into December.  December, for many university students means two main things:  final exam season and the much awaited winter break.

Before we can enjoy the holidays, we must first get through final exams.  For some, if not many, the thought of final exams can bring a large amount of anxiety, nervousness, and of course, stress.

A large number of people often have a negative view on stress.  Some dread being in stressful situations, and view stress as the enemy that they have to either avoid or reluctantly fight during times that present challenges.  However, psychologist Kelly McGonigal’s TEDx Talk called “How to make stress your friend” gives fascinating insight on how one should think about and act upon stress.  If people begin thinking of their stress response as a helpful mechanism, it can not only impact their approach in the situation positively, but also help in terms of health and biologically as well.  Another interesting point to note from McGonigal’s talk is how in times of stress, making connections with others, whether it is reaching out to seek support, or instead, showing support to others, can build strength.

Now before you dive into studying for the final exam season, perhaps take a moment and reflect on how you think about stress.  Viewing stress in a more positive way, like Kelly McGonigal says in her talk, is “saying that you trust yourself to handle life’s challenges.  And you’re remembering that you don’t have to face them alone.”

If you are interested in learning more about taking a different approach in facing stress, feel free to check out the talk “How to make stress your friend” below. All the best of luck!
