Canadian Medical Association Accepts Plan to Assure Journal’s Editorial Independence

The Chronicle: Canadian Medical Association Accepts Plan to Assure Journal’s Editorial Independence

The Canadian Medical Association has agreed to carry out all of the recommendations of a committee set up to resolve a dispute over the editorial independence of the association’s journal, a controversy that led to the dismissal or resignation of the journal’s top editors and some editorial-board members last winter.

According to the “CMAJ Governance Review Panel Final Report,” issued by the committee, the owners of the Canadian Medical Association Journal should steer clear of editorial interference, and editors must be protected against dismissal without cause. The report also says a committee should be established to settle serious differences between the owners and the editorial staff. And the report suggests that CMA Holdings, the association’s for-profit arm, should transfer its sole ownership of the journal back to the association.
