New York City Independent Budget Office: Tuition a rising share of CUNY revenue as state share falls
THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, commonly known as CUNY, is the largest
urban public university system in the country, with approximately 450,000 students. Until the
city’s fiscal crisis in the 1970s, CUNY charged no tuition. But even with the addition of tuition
revenue, CUNY has faced ongoing challenges to its operating budget. CUNY officials say these
challenges have hampered their ability to expand and improve the university’s educational
programs.
