Detroit: Talks continue in teachers’ strike

Detroit Public Schools students and their parents will learn today whether classes really will begin this week, as officials reconsider an earlier threat to start without striking teachers. Also, two community leaders Saturday joined closed-door contract negotiations, which lasted late into the night. Just days after insisting that school would start on time even without striking teachers — using administrators, office staff and custodians in classrooms — Superintendent William F. Coleman III said Saturday morning that other issues prompted him to rethink his position.
