Detroit Free Press: Teachers ready picket signs
As union and school officials meet daily to try to craft a new Detroit teacher contract, talks are not progressing well just one week before teachers are scheduled to report to work, negotiators said Friday.
The Detroit Public Schools’ teachers plan to rally and march Tuesday in front of the district offices at the Fisher Building.
Teachers are expected to vote Sunday at Cobo Hall on whether to report to work Aug. 28. School is scheduled to begin Sept. 5 for Detroit’s 129,000 students.
The union saber-rattling is louder than last year, when the threat of strike also loomed, though none occurred. But this year, union members are saying they will bring picket signs with them to the Cobo vote. The last time that happened, in 1999, a six-day strike followed.
