The Chronicle: New Government Could Change Canada’s Course on Higher Education

The election of a Conservative minority government in Canada on Monday, after 12 years of Liberal rule, has fueled speculation about what might happen to the country’s higher-education policies, especially those dealing with money. Officially, administrators and academics are holding their fire as the new government, under Stephen Harper, takes office.

It could be two weeks before Mr. Harper becomes prime minister and his cabinet is sworn in. University officials are waiting to see what legislation his government will introduce and whether it will deal with the chronic underfinancing of universities and colleges. Minority governments tend to be weak because they lack the ability to push through their agenda, and most of them last no more than two years
