Inside Adelbert Hall, where senior administrators at Case Western Reserve University go to work each day, a copy of a cartoon hanging in an office is more telling than any of the glossy university brochures neatly displayed throughout the building. It shows two office workers, staring at a computer screen, trying to solve a vexing problem. One says to the other, “If we post a $50-million loss with lots of bright colors and fun graphics, maybe nobody will notice.”
