The Chronicle: Boston U. Paid $6.1-Million, Mostly in Deferred Compensation, to Its Former President in 2005
Boston University paid John R. Silber, its long-serving president and chancellor, who retired in 2003, about $6.1-million last year, mostly in deferred compensation, the university announced on Tuesday.
Mr. Silber, who remains the university’s president emeritus and lives in a university-owned residence, said in a written statement that approximately $3.3-million of the lump sum was earned as a deferred percentage of his annual salary, which averaged $96,000 per year over his 34-year tenure. Through investment, deferred compensation grew by $1.3-million, he said. The rest of the payment, about $1.5-million, was for housing, leave benefits, and insurance payments.
