Deal providing domestic partner benefits, raise of 3 percent voted down 63 percent to 37 percent

The Kent State University faculty union has voted down a one-year contract extension that would have included domestic partner benefits.

The union voted 63 percent to 37 percent against the proposal, which also would have included a 3 percent raise and maintenance of health-care costs and benefits at current levels.

Lee Fox, president of the KSU chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said many faculty wanted a higher salary increase. She declined to say how much.

Contract extension for Trent U faculty ratified

Trent University’s board of governors has ratified an extension to the existing 2005-08 collective agreement with the Trent University Faculty Association (TUFA).
The terms of that agreement are now in effect until June 30, 2009.
TUFA members voted in favour of the extension back on march 31, 2008.
Both the university and TUFA, which has 340 members, have agreed that negotiations for a new collective agreement will begin no later than March 1, 2009.

HARARE (AFP) — Thousands of teachers in Zimbabwe’s state schools have ended a three-week strike after being awarded a 754 percent salary increase by the government, their union said on Friday.

“We urge teachers to return to work,” said Raymond Majongwe, secretary general of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, calling the salary increase a victory for teachers and the nation.

Majongwe said the government agreed to hike the monthly teachers’ salary to 3.4 billion Zimbabwe dollars (115,300 US dollars at the official rate, but just 115 US dollars at the widely-used black market rate), up from 369 million Zimbabwe dollars.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, in an opinion issued last week, agreed with the National Labor Relations Board that the union for part-time faculty members at Pace should include every instructor with a class load of at least three credit hours.
