College chief was critical of UNLV’s plans to eliminate programs

The dean of UNLV’s College of Engineering, whose programs are expected to be among the hardest hit in the next round of budget cuts, has been removed from his job and reassigned to the provost’s office, the university confirmed Monday.

Eric Sandgren took over as dean of the college in 2003. His contract, which pays him $193,596 a year, expires in June.

The chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, whose own term is due to end this month, recommended to the system’s regents Tuesday that they fire David Ashley, president of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. The letter from Chancellor James E. Rogers to the members of the Board of Regents, recommended that “Dr. Ashley’s contract not be renewed and that you consider immediate termination of the contract as president…. [T]he problems that have become the subject of much media attention recently are the problems that I long ago asked him and expected him to correct.” Ashley’s performance has been the subject of significant news coverage and he returned from a trip to Singapore last week amid rumors that he would resign.

UNLV President David Ashley’s contract probably will not be renewed by the state higher education system’s Board of Regents, according to a source within the system. The source also said that pressure on Ashley to resign is mounting.

Ashley returned to campus Wednesday after he cut short a trip out of the country.

The University of Nevada at Las Vegas is revisiting a proposed policy dealing with bias and hate crimes in response to fears that it invites First Amendment violations, but faculty leaders there remain concerned that campus administrators will end up curtailing free speech.

The chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, James E. Rogers, urged UNLV officials to rewrite the proposed policy last week, after free-speech concerns were raised by faculty leaders, the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, and editorials published in the Las Vegas Sun and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. A Sun report quoted Chancellor Rogers as saying he was “very, very uncomfortable” with the proposed policy, which he called “far too restrictive.”
