Career Tracks Information Workshop – Fri Sept 27th – all students required to attend

The Career Tracks Information Workshop will take place this Friday, Sept 27th, from 9am-12:30pm in HA 098.

You will hear a description of each track from the Track Champions, as well as information about career possibilities, the skills needed and the highlights of the track programming.

The Business Career Centre staff will be in attendance to add their perspective, and there will be lots of time for you to ask questions.

In preparation for Friday please watch the following 5 minute Track Overview video that gives you an overview of how the career tracks work (timing for choosing your track, registration for track-specific mini-modules, how the Track Requirements sheets work, track overlap for modules). No one will be presenting the information found in the video on Friday, so please do watch it in advance.

I have updated your Connect site with all the Track information, including the Track Requirements sheets (originals found on your Current Students website, under the FT MBA Track Requirements tab), a link to the video, and the Track Overview powerpoint presentation.

Also included is the Pre-req Module List document, which lists all the modules taught in the program, which track they belong to and are cross-listed with, what pre-reqs they have etc.

Please review the information and documents provided above prior to the workshop on Friday, and if you have any questions in the meantime please send them through to askmba@sauder.ubc.ca

Mock Interviews: Follow-Up & Important Message re. Participation

This past Thursday, 51 of you experienced Mock Interview “B”. As a reminder, Mock Interview “A” is part of your Intake Meeting with Mary/Rodrigo. By all accounts, mock interviewing thus far has been a great use of your time.

These learning events were designed to give you a mechanism to try-out your skills, get feedback in a no-risk environment and move forward. We experienced everything from 6 minute answers on the “tell me about yourself” question to people sharing far too much about their family problems, etc. And at the same time, great examples were given, strengths articulated, and most importantly, you had an opportunity to be in the “hot seat” and practice live. This was the purpose of this exercise – to get a baseline experience. So, great job to all of you who have participated. For those scheduled for this Thursday, you should look forward to a valuable 30 minutes.

The Mock Interview journey continues during IPD week begining Tuesday, October 15. More information to follow next week.

No-Shows & IPD Programming

I do have an important message to communicate. These activities are required elements of the program, and involve a significant amount of planning and organization. Twenty-two students ignored the sign-up deadlines. Rodrigo was able to fit in 5 at the last minute. (One of those people did not show up for their interview.) Which leaves 18 who have not scheduled their mock interview, nor communicated with us.

Going forward, it is very important that you sign-up, where required, in a timely fashion. Please respect that it is not a good use of our time to be chasing people after the deadline.

For this one time only, we are going to try and create some slots for the 18 who have not scheduled their interview. As one interview experience leads to the next, and because you will be representing Sauder during interview season, this training is important.

Thank you for your attention on this. Onwards and upwards.

Business Plan Project Updates

Further to the previous blog post – Business Plan Project – Workshop #1 – Thurs, Sept 26, it is crucial that students review Appendix 6 of the IPD Handbook so get yourself well prepared. The handbook is located on Connect > myUBC MBA 2015 > myIPD > IPD Handbook

Please keep in mind that:

  1. Teams need to draft an idea to the first workshop
  2. It needs to fit the assignment criteria, as found in Appendix 6 of the IPD      Handbook.

Should you have any questions, please email askmba@sauder.ubc.ca.

Global Immersion Teams

Global Immersion Location Teams!

The location destination teams are now finalized and the next leg of your UBC MBA journey is ready to begin! We are very pleased to be able to give everyone their first or second choice for location. Location selection took into consideration: student preference, student non-familiarity with the locations and logistical constraints/location capacity.

Click image below to see GIE teams:

Follow up communications regarding Global Immersion will be sent to you in the next couple of weeks by blog post or emails. Some of these will be specific to all Global Immersion participants, and others will be location-specific.

IMPORTANT — Please note that there are two mandatory workshops which all Global Immersion 2014 participants must attend:

9 AM – 4 PM Saturday, October 26th

9 AM  – 1 PM Saturday, February 1st  (*Followed by location specific break-out sessions as required)

Best of luck to all of the teams on this exciting journey!

Net Impact Conference

It has been brought to our attention that there was a Facebook post encouraging the 1st year MBA students to sign up for the Net Impact Conference in Silicon Valley, California from Oct 24-26.

Please note that the 3rd integrated case discussion is scheduled on Friday, Oct 25 and attendance is mandatory. As such, 1st year MBA students will not be able to attend the Net Impact Conference this year.

Your class will however be able to take advantage of this opportunity in the 2nd year of the program.

Thank you for your understanding.

Business Plan Project – Workshop #1 – Thurs, Sept 26

Please refer to Business Plan Project Workshop 1 (Sept 26) – Briefing Notes before the 1st Business Plan Project Workshop which is scheduled next week.

Mandatory Business Plan Workshop #1
Date: Thurs, Sept 26

The first workshop will be to your great advantage if your team has pre-discussed potential new venture ideas and selected a draft idea already as there will be no time in the workshop to do idea generation.

It is crucial that you review this document very carefully as there are readings and preparation tasks that you and your team need to complete before the workshop. This document also saved in Connect > myUBC MBA 2014 > BA 504 (3.0) Integration & Professional Development: Foundation > Business Plan Project > Business Plan Project Workshop 1 (Sept 26) – Briefing Notes.

To find out which team you are in, you may click here and this is also located on Connect within the Business Plan Project folder.

This handbook is designed to answer questions commonly asked by students, as well as to serve as a guidebook mainly for the nature and content of IPD – Academics. We recommend that you browse through this handbook where you can get a brief overview of each component in IPD.
