Exam Reminders – Period 7

With Period 7 exams just around the corner, we wanted to provide some important exam reminders:

  1. Check your exam schedule carefully for dates, times and rooms. It is posted on Connect and on the bulletin board outside the Graduate Programs Office.
  2. You are allowed to enter an exam up to 30 minutes late. Beyond that, you will not be permitted to enter. If you are late for any reason, please email the respective instructor and askmba@sauder.ubc.ca immediately.
  3. Cold & flu season has begun. If you are too ill to write an exam, please email the respective instructor and askmba@sauder.ubc.ca immediately. You MUST get a doctor’s note to have the exam rescheduled. Please assess whether you are too ill to write before the exam begins; once you have begun an exam, the result will stand.

The below is in regard to academic integrity. While we hope and expect that no students would participate in any exam misconduct, it does happen unfortunately. Please be mindful of the below:

  1. In most cases, your instructor and additional exam invigilators will be in the room during your exam.
  2. Manage yourself and your test responses – ensure you are looking only at your own paper and ensure you are not exposing your paper to anyone. Viewing others’ work and allowing others to view your work is considered academic misconduct.
  3. Only bring permitted items into your exam. Your instructor/invigilator will advise what is permitted. Accessing any non-permitted materials/resources during an exam is considered academic misconduct.
  4. Review the following UBC policies regarding exams: http://students.ubc.ca/enrolment/exams/exam-guidelines.

Over the weekend and during exam week, be sure to pace yourself, get enough (some) sleep, eat well, get fresh air breaks, and use your classmates for study support.

Good luck to each and every one of you!

Please let Kelsey (kelsey.pease@sauder.ubc.ca) or Jenny (jenny.chan@sauder.ubc.ca) know if you have any questions or concerns. You can send us an email or drop by the Graduate Programs Office.

Registration Instructions for P3 – P5 – Registration Opens Fri Nov 15th, 10am

Registration for the P3 – P5 modules opens Friday November 15th at 10am and will stay open. You are able to add/drop modules right through the first week of classes for each period.

Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis so please keep this in mind when deciding when to register for your modules.

The Part-time MBA students are also interested in taking modules with your class in P3-P5, so we will open registration for them in the FT modules one week after it’s opened for you. I strongly recommend you make your registration choices during this week.

Please download the most up-to-date copy of the P1-P5 Schedule in Connect in the Schedules & Registration tab in myMBA Program, or from your Current Students website. You will also want to refer to the Track Requirements sheet for your track and the Pre-reqs List while making your registration decisions – these are also found on the Current Students website under the FT MBA Track Requirements tab.

Module outlines are available online – if the outline is not current but the instructor is the same as last year’s then the module will be similar. If there is no current outline you can contact the instructor directly if you need more details.

  • Use the Track Requirement sheet for your track to ensure that you are meeting your track requirements – look at what will be offered in subsequent periods in order to ensure you will get sufficient Track Electives
  • Look at modules you will want to take later and check the Pre-Reqs List to see if they have any pre-reqs (particularly important for FIN modules)
  • You will have time to change your mind – registration is ongoing and you can change your choices right up until the 1st week of each period
  • Please self-register for your P3-P4 modules by logging into the SSC with your CWL. There are video tutorials at the bottom left side of the SSC website to guide you on how to register for modules. SSC Registration video: https://secure.students.ubc.ca/help/AddCourses_demo_video.swf

Waitlists – If the section you want is full, please email askmba@sauder.ubc.ca to get on the waitlist. Students do change their minds as to which module or section they prefer to take, and as seats open up in the full sections we will fill them from the waitlist.

If you have any questions about registration please contact askmba@sauder.ubc.ca

December Holiday Dates Updated & Creativity Presentations

We have been getting some questions about the December Holiday Dates and how the Creativity Presentations will work, so here is some clarification.

Holiday dates updated – Dec 10th, 6pm latest – Sun Jan 5th
In response to feedback from your class we have released Wed Dec 11th as an Inclement Weather day, so you will be finished with all your P2 class requirements on Tues Dec 10th, 6pm at the latest (depending on which Creativity section you are in). This has been updated in your class Google Calendar. (Please note that we will hold Friday Jan 10th as our alternate date for the Creativity Presentations in the case that inclement weather does occur in December. This hold has been put in your class Google calendar as well.)

Creativity Presentations – Tues Dec 10th

  • 8am-11am – Section 002 – HA 132
  • 11:30am-2:30pm – Section 003 – HA 132
  • 3pm-6pm – Section 001 – HA 132

You are required to present during your section timeslot, and attend the full 3 hrs of class time for your Creativity section. You are also welcome to attend other section timeslots as an observer if you wish.

Once your section timeslot is finished you are free to begin your holidays. Please keep in mind when booking any flights/travel when your section timeslot ends, and any travel time you will need to get to the airport etc. The scheduling of the Creativity Presentations is just like a final exam so please do not ask the instructor for an alternate presentation time, or to skip any of your section timeslot in order to leave on holidays early.

Any questions about this can be directed to askmba@sauder.ubc.ca

National Investment Banking Competition – Registration closes Oct 4th

The National Investment Banking Competition is focused on providing a realistic, hands-on experience for students interested in pursuing careers in finance and investment banking.  Since 2007, the top undergraduate and MBA students from across North America have participated in NIBC and learned skills that are crucial to success in the finance industry.

Over the past 5 years, NIBC has grown to become a unique, prestigious and important event for students trying to gain relevant, technical experience. Last year, 156 teams from 39 universities across North America, such as Richard Ivey, The University of Toronto, Wharton, Chicago Booth, and UBC competed for a prize pool of $10,000.

National Investment Banking Competition 2014 Key Information:

–   The deadline to register a team is October 4th, 2013, after which the Preliminary Case will be disseminated
–   Teams can either be three or four members and can register at NIBC.ca
–   Refer to the Competition Fact Sheet and Competition Prospectus for more information.
–   $15,000 prize pool awarded to winning teams
–   Separate MBA and undergraduate competition divisions

About the Competition:

The Competition consists of a Preliminary Round and a Final Round, with cases prepared by investment banking professionals to closely reflect the work of analysts and associates at investment banks. The top 15 MBA teams and top 25 undergraduate teams are chosen from the Preliminary Round to compete in the Final Round for a $15,000 prize pool.

NIBC’s objective in designing the case and competition process is to provide students with an authentic investment banking experience. The Organizing Team works closely with the Case Committee to create a competition that focuses on real-life transactions involving publicly listed companies. Participation in NIBC will provide hands-on experience and insight into the daily responsibilities of both junior and senior investment bankers. These responsibilities include analysis of financial data, running scenarios in financial models, evaluating structural alternatives against client parameters, creating pitch books, and presenting to senior management. The Competition culminates in a live pitch by finalist teams to Managing Directors of leading North American investment banks.

Career Tracks Information Workshop – Fri Sept 27th – all students required to attend

The Career Tracks Information Workshop will take place this Friday, Sept 27th, from 9am-12:30pm in HA 098.

You will hear a description of each track from the Track Champions, as well as information about career possibilities, the skills needed and the highlights of the track programming.

The Business Career Centre staff will be in attendance to add their perspective, and there will be lots of time for you to ask questions.

In preparation for Friday please watch the following 5 minute Track Overview video that gives you an overview of how the career tracks work (timing for choosing your track, registration for track-specific mini-modules, how the Track Requirements sheets work, track overlap for modules). No one will be presenting the information found in the video on Friday, so please do watch it in advance.

I have updated your Connect site with all the Track information, including the Track Requirements sheets (originals found on your Current Students website, under the FT MBA Track Requirements tab), a link to the video, and the Track Overview powerpoint presentation.

Also included is the Pre-req Module List document, which lists all the modules taught in the program, which track they belong to and are cross-listed with, what pre-reqs they have etc.

Please review the information and documents provided above prior to the workshop on Friday, and if you have any questions in the meantime please send them through to askmba@sauder.ubc.ca

Wed Sept 18th TRC Event – Graduate classes in session at Sauder

*Please read below for an important message from Murali regarding the September 18th Truth & Reconciliation Commission*

Dear Graduate Students,

You have likely seen some information about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the national event they are holding to raise awareness of the Indian Residential School System that operated in Canada from 1875 – 1996. The event will take place in Vancouver from September 18th – 21st.

While the majority of undergraduate classes at UBC have been suspended on Wednesday September 18th in order to encourage students to participate in this event, we have made the decision to run graduate classes (MBA & MM) as scheduled that day. Our programs run on a different timeline to the rest of UBC, and with the condensed nature of the learning it makes it very difficult to cancel a full Wednesday of classes at Sauder because of the need to then run numerous make-up classes over your lunch hours and after regular class hours in an already very full schedule.

The decision to run classes this day was not made lightly, is not meant to detract from the importance of the TRC event, nor prevent you from participating outside of class time.

The majority of events and activities associated with the TRC National Event are ongoing and not specific to Sept. 18th – you will find a full listing of events here: http://irsi.aboriginal.ubc.ca/events/. The main activities associated with the TRC take place from Wed Sept 18th – Sat Sept 21st at the PNE Exhibition Grounds – we encourage you to explore the Saturday schedule for activities you may wish to participate in.

We also encourage you to learn more about the important issues of reconciliation by visiting the TRC on-campus exhibits, which are available over numerous days:

In addition, there is a Reconciliation Walk taking place on Sunday, September 22 in Vancouver. The walk is being organized by Reconciliation Canada, a project established as a collaboration between the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society and Tides Canada Initiatives Society.  There will be live entertainment, storytelling and dance before, after and along the walk route. The walk starts at the Vancouver Public Library, loops around downtown, and ends at Science World.

If you would like to get a taste of the TRC event on Wednesday Sept 18th over your lunch hour the First Nations Longhouse at UBC is holding an all-day installation called “Weaving together First Nations’ traditional knowledge and UBC Biology”. There will be numerous displays to explore and it’s a short walk from the Henry Angus building.

The multi-day nature of the TRC event combined with numerous on-campus options should give you ample opportunity to engage in this important conversation, and we encourage you to consider what your participation will look like outside of class hours.

Sincerely,

Murali
