There have been lots of new faces and changes in the GPO office this summer. Here is an up-to-date look at who your ‘go-to-people’ in the Graduate Programs Office are:

Graduation Completion Checks Session

The Graduate Programs Office will be hosting a quick one-on-one advising session at the beginning of P7 for any students who would like to go over their graduation credits.

Please come prepared with a copy of your track worksheet filled out to expedite the process. Track worksheets are located from the current student website at http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/Programs/MBA/MBA_Full_Time/Current_Students or here below. Please be reminded you will need to successfully complete 50 credits in total in order to graduate in the full-time MBA program. It is crucial that your P7 registration qualifies you to graduate and the fulfills the requirements for the track of your choice.


For your information, BAAC 521 001 – Taxation and Decision Making has been cancelled in P7 due to low enrolment.

MBa Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility Scholarship – Reminder

A scholarship of $10,000 has been established for a student in the full-time MBA program at the Sauder School of Business.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest and leadership in corporate social responsibility, business ethics and/or sustainability.
  • Good academic standing.

BA 564 – Leadership Development – P7 Registration

We noticed many of you have not registered yourself in one of the required BA 564 – Leadership Development sections (001, 002 and 003) in P7. Please refer to the course schedule at http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/Programs/MBA/MBA_Full_Time/Current_Students and register a section that fits your schedule on Student Services Centre.

At the same time, please also check your course registration and ensure that you are registered in all the required modules for your track. You may refer to the track worksheets posted on the Sauder website here. As a reminder, the deadline to withdraw P7 modules is at the end of the first week on Oct 31 2014 (or within 4 hours of teaching for a 1.5 credit module).

Capstone Dates: Dec 8-10 2014

Capstone brings together students and the business community in the program’s final week and provides an opportunity to build upon the knowledge and experience gained throughout the preceding 16 months. The week involves business speakers and live cases for students to recommend real business solutions.

Please mark the following dates and time on your calendar and all activities are held on UBC Main Campus.

Day 1 – Dec 8 (8 – 5pm)
Day 2 – Dec 9 (8 – 5pm)
Day 3 – Dec 10 (12 – 5pm)

NIBC Case Competition

Registration for the 2015 National Investment Banking Competition is now open!

The National Investment Banking Competition attracts university students from around the world to compete in an investment banking case competition.

The principal focus of the Competition is to provide students with the opportunity to learn and apply practical skills relevant to investment banking. The Competition consists of a Preliminary Round and a Final Round, with cases developed by professionals from top investment banks designed to replicate potential real-world transactions. Participation in NIBC will provide hands-on experience and insight into the daily responsibilities of both junior and senior investment bankers. These responsibilities include analysis of financial data, running scenarios in financial models, evaluating structural alternatives against client parameters, and creating pitch books. Finalists will have the chance to present their advice in a live pitch to a panel of managing directors from leading North American investment banks, while competing for a $15,000 prize pool.

CUS National Strategy Consulting Competition

What is NSCC?

The NSCC consists of a Canada-wide three-day competition and one-day conference, sponsored by leading firms such as Deloitte, McKinsey, Bain and BCG, providing exceptional undergraduate and MBA students with a perspective of management and strategy consulting. After a successful inaugural event earlier this year, we are pleased to be back for a second time from November 6-8, 2014 in Vancouver. In addition, all future NSCC events will be held in November to better align with the internship recruitment period.

A breakdown of what to expect for both the competition and the conference is located below:

Competition (3 days) – $40/team preliminary fee

We have redesigned the competition format and aim to provide competitors with a realistic consulting simulation experience — one “live” case spread over a two-day period. There is an opportunity for 12 Undergraduate and 8 MBA teams across Canada to compete for a $1,500 cash prize and first round interviews with Deloitte’s Consulting practice. Additional interviews may be offered to winning teams based on performance.

– Thursday afternoon/evening: Arrive at Hyatt Regency hotel and kick off NSCC with the Welcome Dinner

– Friday: Transportation to UBC Sauder School of Business and work on case from 9am-5pm

– Friday evening: Exclusive networking event with local and national consulting firms

– Saturday morning-afternoon: Work on case until 2pm; first round of judging

– Saturday evening: Finalists announced; Wine & Cheese reception; Gala Dinner with final presentations; Winners announced

NSCC – Case Simulation Information & Rules 2014

Although the application period has already begun, students still have time to form a team and submit the preliminary case by our deadline, 11:59pm PST on October 1, 2014. For more information regarding our event and to register a team, please visit our website at www.thenscc.com. The preliminary fee is $40/team and a second installation of $180 or $250 (2 or 3 night stay at the hotel) will be due if the team is chosen to advance.

Conference (1 day)

We have tailored our conference to best suit the experience level of each delegate, either Novice or Experienced. The workshops will address key areas that interest the student based on his or her chosen stream. Our workshops, speaker sessions and Wine & Cheese networking reception will provide 150 of Canada’s brightest business students with the opportunity to gain a well-rounded understanding of the industry, including: what consulting is, the skills required to succeed and what to expect at a client engagement.

Not only will the NSCC provide an invaluable opportunity for top students to demonstrate their analytical and pitching skills on a national stage, delegates will also gain quality networking exposure to an array of like-minded students and highly-regarded consulting professionals.

IPD Capstone is a 2-credit, required MBA module. It is comprised of two parts:

1. Business in Society Course (takes place between P6 & P7)
2. Capstone Course (takes place after P7)

October 20 – 24: Job Search Week
October 20 – 24 is designated as job search week. There is no programming scheduled during job search week. The intent of this week is to provide time for you to make investments in professional development and networking.

We recognize that the communications regarding IPD Week and Job Search Week are late, and that they may be in contradiction to some earlier messaging. For this, we sincerely apologize. If you have already booked flights which conflict with the Business in Society Week of October 14 – 18, please contact Jenny Chan, Acting FT MBA Program Manager, (jenny.chan@sauder.ubc.ca) in the Graduate Programs Office as soon as possible so that we may discuss options with you. Otherwise, all 2nd year FT MBA students are expected to fully attend Business in Society sessions.

 

Low Carbon Case Competition at Yale SOM – Nov 14th

On Friday, November 14th, Yale Responsible Investing Coalition, a project of Net Impact, is hosting the Yale Low-Carbon Portfolio Case Competition.  The competition is an opportunity for MBA students to gain expertise around critical topic in asset management; to compete for $10,000 of prize money and the chance to implement their recommendations with a top tier investment management consultancy; and to network with fund managers, venture capitalists and climate and energy experts. Bob Litterman, the former head of risk management for Goldman Sachs, will be the lead judge.  Competing teams will showcase their work to several judges who are senior executives in industry.

We would like to invite any interested students at Global Network schools to form a team and register.

Case Competition Invite: November 13-14 at Baylor University in Texas

Collusion, whistleblowing, and conflicts of interest are all possible themes for this year’s MBA Case Competition in Ethical Leadership. Last year the case focused on insider trading at Goldman Sachs. This competition is hosted by the Hankamer School of Business, and provides an opportunity for MBA students to put their case presentation skills to the test against peers from reputable American b-schools.

Since this is an invite-only competition, there is no participation fee. Hotels and most meals are also offered care of the hosts. A grand prize of $5000 will be awarded to the winning team, with $1200 for second place and $1000 for third.

To demonstrate your understanding of the issues at play and your ability to address those issues, write a short summary (one page MAX; bullet points encouraged) of the recommendations you would provide to the board of directors of a tech firm that is concerned about the private behaviour of its CEO. This CEO has a reputation of being controversial and sometimes inappropriate, and the Board wants to protect the firm from the risks this presents.

All students interested in this opportunity must complete the above assignment and email it to cde@alumni.ubc.ca by 8:00pm on Tuesday September 30th. The team will be selected by October 2nd.  Questions can also be directed to cde@alumni.ubc.ca.
