Following up on last week’s post, below is some additional information regarding the IPD Capstone Course – Business in Society Program.

IPD Capstone is an academic requirement of the UBC MBA degree. This course is purely academic; it is not part of the BCC professional development offerings.

Full-time MBA students in Vancouver have been registered in BA 508 IPD Capstone – a required 2-credit module. This module is comprised of two required academic parts as outlined below:

1. October 14 – 17: IPD – Business in Society
2. December 8 – 10: IPD – Capstone Course

Last week, registered students should have received an email from the faculty members outlining Business in Society’s activities, topics, deliverables, schedule and location. Information is on the BA 508 Connect site.

Also scheduled during this week, on Wednesday, October 15th from 5:30 – 7:30pm, is a Networking Event. Please RSVP on COOL.

October 20 – 24: Job Search Week

October 20 – 24 is designated as job search week. There is no programming scheduled during job search week. The intent of this week is to provide time for you to make investments in professional development and networking.

OTSW Early Bird Extended!!

What is OTSW?

12 different technologies developed on UBC campus have been collected and made available for UBC students.  These technologies are waiting to be commercialized by enthusiastic entrepreneurs.  Over the course of a weekend, students will be placed in teams of 6 based on common technology interests.  Teams are to formulate business plans and create pitches that will be presented to a panel of judges.  There is opportunity to use these technologies in future course work or even continue commercialization out of personal interest.

Please come prepared with a copy of your track worksheet filled out to expedite the process. Please be reminded you will need to successfully complete 50 credits in total in order to graduate in the full-time MBA program. It is crucial that your P7 registration qualifies you to graduate and the fulfills the requirements for the track of your choice.

We noticed many of you have not registered yourself in one of the required BA 564 – Leadership Development sections (001, 002 and 003) in P7. Please refer to the course schedule at http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/Programs/MBA/MBA_Full_Time/Current_Students and register a section that fits your schedule on Student Services Centre.

At the same time, please also check your course registration and ensure that you are registered in all the required modules for your track. You may refer to the track worksheets posted on the Sauder website here. As a reminder, the deadline to withdraw P7 modules is at the end of the first week on Oct 31 2014 (or within 4 hours of teaching for a 1.5 credit module).

Capstone brings together students and the business community in the program’s final week and provides an opportunity to build upon the knowledge and experience gained throughout the preceding 16 months. The week involves business speakers and live cases for students to recommend real business solutions.

Otherwise, all 2^nd year FT MBA students are expected to fully attend Business in Society sessions.

On Friday, November 14th, Yale Responsible Investing Coalition, a project of Net Impact, is hosting the Yale Low-Carbon Portfolio Case Competition.  The competition is an opportunity for MBA students to gain expertise around critical topic in asset management; to compete for $10,000 of prize money and the chance to implement their recommendations with a top tier investment management consultancy; and to network with fund managers, venture capitalists and climate and energy experts. Bob Litterman, the former head of risk management for Goldman Sachs, will be the lead judge.  Competing teams will showcase their work to several judges who are senior executives in industry.

We would like to invite any interested students at Global Network schools to form a team and register.

Collusion, whistleblowing, and conflicts of interest are all possible themes for this year’s MBA Case Competition in Ethical Leadership. Last year the case focused on insider trading at Goldman Sachs. This competition is hosted by the Hankamer School of Business, and provides an opportunity for MBA students to put their case presentation skills to the test against peers from reputable American b-schools.

Since this is an invite-only competition, there is no participation fee. Hotels and most meals are also offered care of the hosts. A grand prize of $5000 will be awarded to the winning team, with $1200 for second place and $1000 for third.

To demonstrate your understanding of the issues at play and your ability to address those issues, write a short summary (one page MAX; bullet points encouraged) of the recommendations you would provide to the board of directors of a tech firm that is concerned about the private behaviour of its CEO. This CEO has a reputation of being controversial and sometimes inappropriate, and the Board wants to protect the firm from the risks this presents.

All students interested in this opportunity must complete the above assignment and email it to cde@alumni.ubc.ca by 8:00pm on Tuesday September 30^th. The team will be selected by October 2^nd.  Questions can also be directed to cde@alumni.ubc.ca.
