Geographic Information Science (GIS)

What in the world is GIS?

A quick google search would tell you that geographic information science is the scientific discipline that captures, processes, represents and analyzes geographic information.

Everything exists somewhere. That is, everything on planet Earth is inherently geographical. And any geographer could tell you that when studying any phenomena or system on Earth, context is important. Temporal, social, political, environmental, geographical… Context frames your research and understanding of why things are the way they are.

This is part of the reason why geography is such a broad field of study. It has to encompass every other discipline out there! In my time at the UBC, I have had the great opportunity to take every GIS course offered to undergraduate geography students. After the first, my eyes had been opened to the seemingly unlimited potential for studies in geographic information sciences. The following GIS pages have been created for each course, each which outlines the theoretical and practical knowledge I have gained.
