Darran is an Associate Registrar and the Director of the Student Support and Advising unit.  He supports his team in their work to support student’s academic success through navigating the ins and outs of the campus, ensuring their financial wellbeing and support through effective budgeting, award and bursary program management, and student directed programming like our Financial Wellness workshops, Scholars Community and Financial Wellness Peer Program.

One of the things Darran enjoys most about working in ES is the diversity: “Each day brings something new with, likely, someone new.  Being able to work across faculties and administrative units provides me with a view of the institution that not very many people get to see.  It’s a valuable perspective to build, create and bring about positive growth and change.”

Which destination did you choose and why?

I travelled to the Mayan Riviera, just south of Playa del Carmen, Mexico.  In August 2016 three friends and I were talking about what the next six months was going to look like for us, and the common theme was that they were going to be ‘busy’.  As such, we decided that a getaway – to somewhere with natural vitamin D and few distractions – was a must.  None of us had done an all-inclusive vacation before and we all had many books we that were unread on our respective nightstands…so we felt that this was a perfect marrying of a new experience and clearing our nightstands!

In making the decision to go to an all-inclusive we had a few priorities – comfort and safety, access to water and excursions, diversity of food selection and our peers at the resort.  We thankfully found the right mix at our stay at the Occidental Grand Xcaret.

What was your most memorable moment during your vacation?

Despite the mild panic attack when putting on my snorkel mask, snorkeling through Akumal Bay coming in contact with 30 and 50 year old sea turtles was definitely a highlight.  That, and then continuing the snorkeling though stalagmites and stalactites in a cave nearby and jumping into turquoise water were exceptional visits off the resort.

What was your favourite meal you had?

Ceviche made by a chef at the resort beachside – paired with fresh guacamole and pio de gallo!

What is one piece of advice you would give to people who want to travel to this city?

When going to an all-inclusive (especially when it’s your first time), check your assumptions and be open to relaxing in full, and be sure to go off site and explore the beauty of the cities and spaces around you!
