Synchronous Communication

Synchronous Communication

I. “Chat”

Why?
Chat venues provide a safe environment where students can brainstorm ideas and discuss details pertinent to their group projects. Students, who normally do not communicate with one another in class, are now provided a medium in which they can freely express concerns and ideas. This is an effective tool for synchronous communication, although I believe it should be reserved for use with smaller groups during designated consultation hours.

Educational Experience?
“Chat” is a good venue for students to get online and coordinate activities in real-time within their classmates. It can also be used as a brainstorming activity or even as a way to study for exams. Each group will have their own “chat room” that they can use any time after school hours to discuss details of the project. Chat archives can be accessed by the teacher to view participation, the discussion path, and appropriate use of the feature.

Limitations?
It is very important to create a standardized ‘chatiquette’ within the class in order to avoid misunderstandings. Remember: you cannot rely on facial expressions or body language in a chat room! Due to the sheer speed of communication some may find that reflection and “deep” analysis or interaction is not easily attained in this environment. (Burnett, 2003)

Though my students are all within the same time zone, busy schedules often interfere with pre-determined after school meeting times. By designating consultation times, some students will invariably miss out on the interaction. As well, those who are slow typists or, if there are too many people chatting at once, some may find themselves confused or left behind due to rapid interactions. Students who have difficulties with reading and typing will find this form of communication rather stressful. Students will also miss out on the opportunities to respond to visual cues through this chat function. (Burnett, 2003)
