taiwan eats: part 4

And the next part of the Taiwan Eats installment: part 4!

Strawberry Schneeballen @ Bo Cafe Schneeballe, Qsquare (純真草莓雪球餅乾 @ 雪球餅乾咖啡館, Qsqure)

20160217_212428

We were walking through Qsquare on the first day when we came across these interesting things. The girl immediately gave us a sample to try – we got the lemon chocolate one which was covered in pop rocks, and it tasted really good. So, we decided to get the strawberry one to try. I told her that I didn’t want to eat it yet, so she told me to just use a hard object to break it apart when I got home; they have a mallet there for you to break it with as well.

They have lots of different flavours!

Apologies for the not-so-good photo quality but the ice cream waffle was delicious. You can leave it in the fridge for a few days, and it tastes better when cold. Because we got the strawberry one it just tasted like strawberry Pocky but it was good nonetheless!

Sesame Mochi @ ??? (芝麻麻糬 @ ???)

20160219_052644

I literally do not remember where we got this mochi from, it was in a bakery on the second floor of Taipei Main station. The sesame flavour was very fragrant, and because we left it for a day the mochi skin got a bit hard… but I’m sure it would have been delicious had we eaten it right away! Just be careful not to have black specks in your teeth after you eat it.

Local Taiwanese Fruits @ Bin Jiang Market (台灣水果 @ 濱江市場)

20160219_205729

We decided to visit a local Taiwanese market, just to see what it was right. We found that there were some fruits that we both wanted to get so we decided to buy them.

Calamansi? Key Lime

20160219_213146

I’m pretty sure it’s not a key lime, because those are sweet. This was super sour, but I had no problem eating it – Stef did though, she kept saying it was super sour. Which it was but I just dealt with it 😛 Funny story though, we were just two random girls at the market and Stef only wanted to get 2 of these fruit. These are tiny (smaller than a golf ball) so when she put them on the scale, the woman selling them just gave it to us for free (because who only buys 2…?)!

Guava

20160219_211101

Stef and I have only ever had guavas in juice form, and we always thought they were pink on the inside. But this one was white! We also took a bite and it was super hard, so we thought it wasn’t ripe yet. I happened to have a box so we put it in the box to wait for it to ripen up. At breakfasts, however, we realized that maybe guavas are just like that… the guavas at breakfast we had were quite good, though. Unfortunately our guava over-ripened so we didn’t get a chance to eat it T.T

Canistel

20160219_210635

This is by far the most gross fruit that I’ve ever eaten. It was mushy and literally just tasted like a sweet egg yolk. We paid for it so I didn’t want to waste too much of it.. but it was really just too mushy and sandy for me. Stef put it in her cup noodles though (our lunch that day) and said it tasted okay (gross).

Wax Apple

20160219_213449

Stef and I both love wax apples. We’ve had them a lot in Hong Kong before, and so we decided to buy one to eat. The one we got here was absolutely delicious (although a bit expensive…). We eventually decided to buy 2 more at the Shilin Night Market and THOSE ones were expensive and they weren’t as good as this one!

Custard Apple

When we left Taiwan, the custard apple wasn’t ripe yet. So Stef smuggled in to Seoul (shh) and we shared it with our friends. It tasted like a mix between a lychee and a jackfruit and it was good, but it made me itchy.. so I didn’t have too much. But it was good! Much better than the canistel.

Stinky Tofu @ Black Mama, Maji Square

20160220_003013

Just your normal stinky tofu. But it was much better than the one at the Raohe Night Market because it was more flavourful!

Fried Milk @ Shilin Night Market (炸奶 @ 士林夜市)

20160220_024723

This was just a mushy… thing. It was quite sweet and milky but it’s definitely not something I would eat again, it was way too mushy for me.

Papaya Milk @ Shilin Night Market (木瓜牛奶 @ 士林夜市)

20160220_030953

Papaya milk is a must try in Taiwan. I just got one from a random stall inside the Shilin Night Market but it was kind of awkward because the guy told me the papaya was a bit bitter, and would I mind if he added more sugar into it.. but it still tasted okay. Stef didn’t like it though but I love my papaya milk!

Agar Jelly Popsicles @ Shilin Night Market (寒天Q棒 @ 士林夜市)

20160220_032750

The most interesting thing ever; you’d expect popsicles to be icy or whatnot but this one was a jelly. We just got the yogurt/yakult flavour and it was absolutely delicious! It’s making me kind of wish that we had each got our own…

Quail Egg Skewers @ Shilin Night Market (鵪鶉蛋串燒 @ 士林夜市)

20160220_040845

Originally we had no idea what these were but we saw a line so we decided to get it. I really don’t like eating eggs so if I had known it was eggs.. I wouldn’t have eaten it at all. You can choose what sauces you want to put on it as well (I think we got curry and something else); I think if I like eggs I would have liked it (but too bad that I don’t!).

Cow’s Tongue Biscuit @ Shilin Night Market (牛舌饼 @ 士林夜市)

20160220_041033

Looks like a cow tongue but obviously not a cow tongue; they come in a salty flavour (with peanut) and a sweet flavour (with malkist). We opted for the malkist one, and the biscuit itself was very flaky, like a Wife Cake. It was delicious!

Mini Sausages @ Shilin Night Market (小香腸 @ 士林夜市)

20160220_041702

Mini sausages on a stick. How can they NOT be good? Enough said.
