Recent changes to both BC and Canadian legislation, as well as a new directive from the BC Ministry of Education, mean that the legal land professional landscape regarding sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in schools has evolved. To help schools make these changes, the SOGI 1 2 3 campaign was launched to demonstrate that LGBTQ-inclusive education is as simple as 1 2 3. The new website, SOGIeducation.org, shares proven SOGI-inclusive tools and resources in three key areas:
- SOGI 1: Policies & Procedures – The key components of effective SOGI-inclusive policies and procedures
- SOGI 2: Inclusive Environments – Practices and behaviours that lead to SOGI-inclusive learning environments
- SOGI 3: Curriculum Resources – SOGI-inclusive lesson plans that align with the current K-12 curriculum
SOGI 1 2 3 is a collaboration of the BC Ministry of Education, BC Teachers’ Federation, UBC Faculty of Education, Out in Schools, ARC Foundation, nine school districts across BC, and local, national and international LGBTQ community organizations. Visit SOGIeducation.org today to find proven SOGI-inclusive tools and resources for educators, including the Ministry of Education SOGI Policy Guide and a series of K-12 age-appropriate entry points with links to lesson plans on TeachBC.
