MCML Power shutdown Saturday August 12th 6am – 11am

Standard

**Important**

Macmillan Users:

Please note that there is a building wide power shutdown requested for HR Macmillan on Saturday August 12th 6am – 11am (4 hours)

This shutdown is being coordinated on behalf of the various ongoing construction projects in MCML. All the high impact electrical work related to these projects should be completed during this time. This shutdown will affect all areas of the MacMillan building and result in limited occupancy during this period due to lighting, HVAC, and life safety systems being offline.

It is suggested that Faculty, staff and students shut down desktop computers, external USB devices and any sensitive equipment end of day, Friday August 11th. Fridges and freezers should be ok during this period as long as they are not opened. For those with -80’s freezers/sensitive equipment that could be negatively impacted during this shut down, please contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss potential power backup options.

Any questions please contact andy.jeffries@ubc.ca

Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) September 10, 16 & 17, 2023 application opens July 28!

Standard

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) will be offering a Graduate Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) on September 10, 16 & 17, 2023.

The Grad ISW is a 24-hour, fully participatory, and peer-based professional development workshop for graduate students that is beneficial to both new and experienced instructors.

Please note: You must attend all face-to-face sessions and complete all independent work for the complete duration of the workshop, (i.e. the entire 24-hour workshop).

To apply for the waitlist for September 10, 16 & 17, 2023 ISW please click here: https://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/graduate-instructional-skills-workshop-september-10-16-17-2023-preliminary-application/

Application opens on July 28 at 9 am and closes on September 6, 2023 at 4:30 pm. By clicking this link, you are applying for the WAITLIST only and this DOES NOT register you for the workshop. Graduate ISWs at UBC are in high demand. To create an equitable registration process all graduate students who apply for an ISW will first be enrolled on a waitlist, from which participants are randomly selected. If a participant has applied for more than one ISW waitlist, their name will appear more frequently when generating the participant list, giving them a higher chance of being selected for an ISW. If you are accepted into the workshop, you will be contacted by our office to confirm your registration. For more information and a list of all upcoming sessions visit: http://ctlt.ubc.ca/gradisw

Workshop Eligibility:

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is eligible if they are:

  • a full-time or part-time registered graduate student at UBC during the academic term when the ISW is offered
  • a graduate student at UBC who has completed degree requirements but has not yet convocated
  • a joint degree graduate student who is enrolled at UBC and another institution
  • a graduate student at UBC pursuing non-degree studies
  • a visiting graduate student that is eligible to take courses

A participant who wishes to take the Grad ISW is not eligible if they are:

  • not a graduate student at UBC
  • a graduate student at UBC who has on-leave status
  • a visiting graduate student that is not eligible to take courses

November 2023 Graduation Deadlines

Standard

The online application for November 2023 graduation  is now open for eligible students.  Enrollment Services will not be sending out a notification to students, as they don’t want to also capture (and confuse) those students who are expecting to graduate in May 2024, instead.  If you are aware of any student who missed graduating in May 2023 and should apply to graduate in Nov 2023, please let them know to apply, now.

Please encourage eligible students to apply regardless of outstanding fees or current progress of their program (ie. waiting for final grades from exams, or thesis due by October).  Students have until Friday, October 20, 2023 (for G+PS Administered programs only) to submit their application through the Student Service Centre (SSC).  The link to the application can be found under Graduation, after the students have logged in.

Below are a few relevant dates to note and to add into your calendars:

Application period: June 15, 2023 – October 20, 2023

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN YOUR OFFICE AVAILABLE TO WORK ON YOUR LISTS!

Friday November 3, 2023

Last Day! – this is your final day to submit any missing requirements to G+PS.  The lists have to be finalized by 4pm on that day.

Students will be assigned to their ceremonies in October, based on their degree and primary specialization (if applicable).  The schedule for the ceremonies is not available, at this time.  Please visit the Graduation at UBC website for updates.

Please direct students with general inquiries about applying to graduate to the Student Services graduation webpage for information.  They can also contact Enrollment Services at graduation@ubc.ca.

We will be having a graduation training session for GPO’s closer to the deadlines with details to follow.
