DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) Scholarships and Research Grants

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) Study Scholarships and Research Grants are available for highly qualified graduate students, PhD candidates, and post-doctoral researchers in all disciplines to study and carry out research at universities or research institutes in Germany. These scholarship provide funds for a period of study and/or research in Germany.

UBC is a DAAD Partner University and may nominate a total of two candidates for the Study Scholarship and/or Long-Term Research Grant programs. 

Applicants are required to submit their application via the DAAD Online Portal. Applicants are also required to submit a copy of their application to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by 4:00 pm on Friday, 15 October 2021. Applicants must also advise their referee to submit their reference electronically to G+PS by that deadline.

NASA International Internship

The NASA International Internship is a NASA initiative that seeks to better prepare students (U.S. and international) for future missions that require innovative thinking and cooperation with international collaborators. Interns take part in seminars on a wide variety of topics from both internal and external experts, informal discussions, supervised research, group projects, cultural lunches/ dinners, poster presentations, tours of NASA facilities, and other self-organized social events in the area.

Internships are offered by NASA in three sessions during the calendar year: spring (16 weeks), summer (10 weeks) and fall (16 weeks). Current NASA participating research centres are the Ames Research Center and the Goddard Space Flight Center.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) will nominate highly qualified Canadian university students who may subsequently be selected by NASA to participate in internship projects along with U.S. students and students from abroad.

• Duration of internship: 10 to 16 weeks
• Internship options: Summer 2022 session (10 weeks) / Fall 2022 session (16 weeks) / Spring 2023 session (16 weeks)
• Value: $2,000 to $3,000/selected applicant and a possibility of $6,000 to $8,000 from other sources
• Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be a Canadian citizen on the date of application
  • Be enrolled in a Canadian university as a full-time student in a graduate degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) in a topic of interest to the CSA and relevant to NASA’s mission priorities

Hello anyone interested in conservation!

Allow us to introduce the Conservation Discussion Group (CDG)! We meet every other week on Tuesdays to discuss any and all things conservation-related. We invite speakers and participants from many departments across UBC, and from inside and outside academia, to try to broaden our exposure to conservation ideas and practices. To give you an idea of conservation topics, last year we introduced the CDG/Conservation Science Initiative Spotlight series (which we plan to bring back) and addressed anti-racism in ocean sciences, and conservation across many scales of research. This year, CDG will start with meeting by Zoom, but when conditions allow, we’ll have hybrid meetings to accommodate Zoom participants and those who want to meet in person! Meetings will be every other Tuesday from 3-4pm, starting with a welcome session next Tuesday September 14th. We’ll send out a Zoom link later in the week to the CDG listserv – you can subscribe by sending a message with ‘subscribe’ in the subject line to ‘conservation-request@zoology.ubc.ca‘.

What are some potential discussion topics this term? We hope to have a month focused on networking, bringing in researchers outside UBC, and we hope to discuss the effects of current events (particularly COVID-19 and its impacts) on conservation. But these are only a few ideas… Come join us next week in our welcome session to help shape our themes!

IAR Fellows receive benefits that will support their research and scholarly development. The Institute of Asian Research, within UBC’s School of Public Policy & Global Affairs, invites currently enrolled graduate students to apply for its IAR Fellows program. The program brings together graduate students with interests in issues of relevance to contemporary Asia. IAR Fellows will receive a research stipend and work space in the IAR’s CK Choi building (conditional on covid restrictions), as well as opportunities for collaboration and mentorship. The program welcomes applications from all disciplines across the social sciences, applied sciences, professional schools, and humanities. Further details and a short application form are attached.
