UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems invites faculty, staff and students to hear accomplished researchers address topical issues. Our next speaker in the LFS Scholar Series is Dr. Amanda MacFarlane from Health Canada who speaks about folate intake among women in an era of fortification.

Speaker: Dr. Amanda MacFarlane, Head of the Micronutrient Research Section in the Nutrition Research Division, Health Canada

Topic: Lessons learned from Canada: Optimizing folic acid intake among women of childbearing age in an era of fortification

Host: Dr. Angela Devlin, LFS Graduate Program Advisor and Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, UBC Faculty of Medicine

Amanda MacFarlane is a Research Scientist in the Nutrition Research Division at Health Canada, where she examines the effect of folate intake on genotoxicity in somatic cells, including the impact of maternal and paternal folate intake on germline and offspring genomic and epigenomic stability. She also uses national health survey and cohort data to identify the socioeconomic, dietary and genetic determinants of folate and B vitamin status of Canadians.

Extended call for papers for the 24th UBC Interdiciplinary Legal Studies Graduate Conference — 5-6 May 2020

Changes in the law over 25 years

Summary

Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British
Columbia invites graduate students from all disciplines to
participate in the 24th annual UBC Interdisciplinary Legal
Studies Graduate Conference held on May 5-6, 2020 in
Vancouver. Vancouver is on the unceded, ancestral and
occupied traditional lands of the Musqueam,
Tsleil-Waututh, and Squamish Nations. The conference
provides graduate students and junior scholars with an
opportunity to discuss and share ideas, receive feedback,
and network with peers.

We invite submissions from students from any discipline
that fits with the theme, Changes in Law Over 25 Years.
Our law school is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2020,
and our conference is centred around developments and
changes in the law since the 50th anniversary in 1995.

Topics

Papers may be on any topic, including (but not limited to):
-Technology and the law
-International law
-Environmental law
-Indigenous law
-Law and race
-Feminist law

Submissions

Submissions should include the title of the paper, a
250-word abstract in English, the author’s name, email
address, and institutional affiliation. We welcome
submissions from current graduate students and folks
who have recently completed graduate studies (up to one
year post-graduation). Papers from JD or LLB students
may also be considered.

Please send your submissions via email to
ubclawgradconference@gmail.com by March 15, 2020.
Applicants will be notified if they have been offered a
place at the conference in March 2020 via email. Successful
applicants must register, pay the $100 (CAD) conference
registration fee and submit their full paper by April
13, 2020. Those who wish to attend the conference
dinner must also pay an additional $50 (CAD) fee.

I am currently recruiting for several summer 2020 Sustainability Scholars Program internships: Deadline to apply is midnight, March 8. 

Successful candidates work under the mentorship of a partner organization, and are immersed in real world learning where they can apply their research skills and contribute to advancing organizational sustainability goals. Internships run May 4 to August 14, 2020. Each Scholar receives $22 per hour to complete 250 hours of work.

The Pacific Regional Society of Soil Science and the Fraser Valley Branch of the BC Institute of Agrologists invite you to attend our Spring Workshop, to be held on March 7, 2020, at the University of the Fraser Valley – Abbotsford Campus.

The theme of this year’s workshop, ‘Soils in the Field‘ is aimed at highlighting the need for highly trained soil scientists, not only in theory but in practice. The workshop will feature several exciting talks from experts including a panel discussion on the demand for soil science education for students and professionals.

The price is $25 for students and $70 for non-students, and includes registration, lunch, refreshments, and PRSSS annual membership for 2020/2021.
