Humans, Rising Sea Levels and the Fraser River Estuary | Ocean Matters July Lecture

BC’s Fraser River Estuary is under immense threat from both climate change and human activities. This wetland is a biodiversity hotspot that is vital habitat for a large number of plants and animals, including millions of migrating Pacific salmon and shorebirds.

Since 1827, human activities have caused the disappearance and degradation of these important fish and wildlife habitats. This continues today, with even more development, pollution, industrial activities and spread of invasive species. However, in the 21st century sea-level rise is likely to pose an even greater danger, unless we do something to protect this incredible ecosystem.

In this talk, Eric Balke will tell us about his work protecting the Fraser River Estuary, and his research into ways we can protect it against both present and future threats.

The Speaker

Eric Balke is the Coordinator of the South Coast Conservation Land Management Program. He manages a portfolio of conservation lands as part of a partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, Ducks Unlimited Canada, The Nature Trust of British Columbia, and the Canadian Wildlife Service/Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Call for Nominations: Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

Note: This scholarship is for students pursuing their first doctoral degree. Students pursuing course-based degrees are not eligible.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years.

The deadline for applicants to inform the LFS grad program office of their intent to apply is August 6, 2018.  Please email lfs.gradmgr@ubc.ca of your intent to apply.

The deadline for graduate programs to submit nominations to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is 4:00 pm on Tuesday, 25 September 2018.
