Invitation to Black graduate students to provide input on a Postdoctoral & Doctoral Completion Fellowship Program

Standard

Please circulate to all graduate students in your units

In alignment with UBC’s institutional commitments to the development of a more just, equitable, diverse and inclusive academic and research environment, UBC is taking action to improve the recruitment and support of outstanding Black scholars.

One dimension of this effort is the potential development of new doctoral completion and postdoctoral fellowship programs to provide enhanced opportunity and support for emerging Black scholars to advance their preparation for successful academic careers.

The envisioned doctoral completion fellowship would provide financial and mentorship support to final-year Black doctoral students to help them strengthen their academic profile for the academic job market.

The envisioned postdoctoral fellowship would provide salary and research funding, access to teaching opportunities, career development, and academic networking for cohorts of Black postdoctoral fellows across any academic discipline.

Current UBC-V Black doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to join an upcoming conversation to help shape the possibilities of this new program. This feedback is crucial in helping to design programs that can address needs and provide opportunities to emerging Black scholars.

An online survey version of this consultation is also available here. You are welcome to provide feedback using the survey, and/or register to attend a remote engagement session.

2022 Symposium on Global Community Engagement: Call for Proposals

Standard

2022 Symposium on Global Community Engagement: Call for Proposals

The Office of Regional and International Community Engagement (ORICE) is hosting a symposium on global community engagement this year with a focus on the theme: Contested Spaces, Contested Impact on March 10th. We are now accepting applications for concurrent session presentations, workshops, dialogues etc. that engage with the theme of this ORICE symposium: Contested Spaces, Contested Impact. A broad interpretation of the theme is welcomed, but in selecting it we have considered some of the many questions that arise in community-university collaborations including physical and psychological questions of belonging, safety and power. We have considered conflicting and differently understood standpoints, expectations, motivations and purposes of engagement and in turn consider how the question of meaningful impact is also contested. Impact for who? By who? In what ways?

We invite UBC students at all academic levels to present on their community engaged scholarship and encourage the inclusion of community partners and faculty partners to co-present when applicable. While any type of presentation is welcome, we encourage applicants to expand on what one might consider to be a symposium presentation—feel free to bring in storytelling, creativity and anything else that might feel authentic to your work! The deadline to submit your completed application is February 18th, 2022 at 11:59 PM PST.

Stay tuned for the symposium general registration which opens on the morning of February 28th, 2022.
