Green College Fast-Track Student Recruitment – Fall 2022

Standard

Applications for resident membership at Green College are now open. Below you will find some information about priority applications.

Priority Applications for Residency

We are pleased to announce that the 2022 fast track (priority) process for admission to residency at Green College is now open. Details are included in the attached letter from Principal Mark Vessey. We hope that you will consider recommending Green College to students entering your programs this September, and we look forward to receiving inquires and applications as soon as you and your students are ready. Early applications are encouraged, particularly for your priority applicants.

A bit about Green College

Green College is a graduate residence on the UBC campus, with a mandate to promote exchange between academic disciplines at the graduate and postdoctoral levels. Since 1993, more than a thousand UBC graduate students have taken advantage of the College’s unique combination of west-coast living conditions, extracurricular academic programs, and broad array of social, artistic and recreational opportunities. As members of “a dynamic community of scholars dedicated to the multi-disciplinary ideal” (Cecil Green, founder), residents of the College enrich their own intellectual lives and bring insights from cross-disciplinary and extracurricular conversations to bear on the work they do in their home departments and programs.

The College provides accommodations for around 85 graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels, and another 15 places are held for postdoctoral scholars and visiting faculty. The maximum length of residency for members varies by program, and ranges from one to four years. No distinction is made between “professional” and “academic” programs; students in the Juris Doctor program are also eligible. Residency is offered incrementally in 12-month leases (“housing contract”), typically beginning in September.

Should you have any questions about the College’s membership process, please contact me at gc.membership@ubc.ca. For any questions about public programming or College promotion and communications, please contact our Academic Program Manager at gc.programs@ubc.ca.

We hope to see you online in our virtual Coach House for one of our public events or lectures this year. You can sign up for the Green List to receive weekly public programming notices. All publicized events at the College are open to the public, and no registration is required.

Invitation to Provide Input on a Postdoctoral & Doctoral Completion Fellowship Program for Black Scholars

Standard

I hope this week has been kind to you.

My name is Dr. Ismaël Traoré. I work in the Provost’s Office as Director, Faculty Equity.

My colleague Dr. Jenny Phelps and I met with you on February 2nd at the Deans and Provost’s Office meeting. We shared a concept note of a proposed Doctoral Completion and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Black and Indigenous scholars. Thank you for your enthusiasm and feedback on the possibilities of this program.

We have since then talked with additional Indigenous stakeholders, and the consensus is to take a different approach for engaging with Indigenous scholars. As such, we will proceed with consulting with Black scholars while we recalibrate the Indigenous engagement approach.

We would appreciate if you could circulate the attached invitation letter to all faculty and graduate students in your departments.
