Student Scholarship for Conference at SFU (September 18-20): What is the future of work in agriculture?

Standard

Hello,

My name is Sarah-Louise Ruder; I recently completed my PhD at UBC’s Institute for Resources Environment and Sustainability. I am helping to organize an upcoming conference about the “future of work,” hosted at Simon Fraser University from September 18 to 20, 2024.

The convening group, the international Sociotechnical Systems Roundtable, secured funds to offer student scholarships to cover registration fees.

Could you please help me circulate the call for student scholarship applications? Non-students who are working at the UBC Farm are also encouraged to apply.

Student Scholarship for Conference (September 18-20, 2024)

We don’t know the future of work. We need to invent it!

Join growers, workers, field managers, organizational design consultants, academics, and students from across Canada, the United States, and Europe to together, learn how to design the future of agricultural work.

We are especially interested in student participation for the agriculture topics. We want to learn from your knowledge, passion, and experience, as together we explore how to design human centered workplaces. No prior knowledge of theory or novel technologies is needed; just an openness to learn and to share your insights and ideas.

This action-oriented conference focuses on human-centered design, using socio-technical systems (STS) theory to uphold and enhance the dignity of work and then deploying, adapting, or resisting technology to support this goal. Past participants have talked about how the relationships and knowledge they’ve acquired from these gatherings have enriched both their personal and professional lives.

If you’re interested in being part of a learning community focused on designing what agricultural work can and should be, apply for a Student Scholarship to join the conference for free ($623.93 CAD value)!

TO APPLY:

  1. Submit a short statement (no more than 200 words). Tell us who you are, about your interactions with the food system, and why you want to be involved in designing the future of work in agriculture!
  2. Make the email subject line “Roundtable Student Scholarship”
  3. Send to Erik Nicholson <erik@pandionstrategy.com> by Thursday, August 22
  4. Scholarship winners will be selected by Friday, August 30

WHEN: Wednesday, September 18 to Friday, September 20, 2024

WHERE: Simon Fraser University’s Wosk Centre for Dialogue (580 W Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V6B 1L6)

More details: The 2024 Roundtable meeting is a 3-day DESIGN LAB to develop principles and prototypes of digital and AI-supported “Good Work”. Participants will apply these principles in industry teams to co-design possibilities for human-centered work and organizations for their industry — Agriculture, Health Care/Life Sciences, Higher Education, and Manufacturing. The Design Lab will feature a customized mix of various methods — participative design, future scoping, design thinking, search conferences, and AI-supported deliberation design — coupled with brief, provocative presentations by thought leaders to stimulate innovative thinking.
