Decolonizing Research Methods Workshop on Thursday, Sept 14 from 3-5:30pm in the Liu Case Room

What to expect? The workshop will begin with a introduction to Decolonized Research Methods (DRM) from Dr. Nora Angeles, Associate Professor at the School of Community and Regional Planning. Then, Dawn Hoogeveen, a postdoc at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, will share her experiences using DRM in her research in a Q&A session. The event will close with Dawn Morrison, Founder, Chair and Coordinator of the B.C. Food Systems Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty, sharing her experience straddling between the worlds of community organizing and academia and offering insights for engaging in this work.

You can also expect some delicious refreshments from Doughgirls.

Community Science Celebration Opportunity

Vancouver Community Science Celebration 2017 Are you looking to start off your year with a fun and exciting volunteering opportunity! We have just the event for you! UBC Let’s Talk Science and Genome BC are recruiting volunteers to help run two booths at this year’s annual Vancouver Community Science Celebration on September 16th and 17th! You can help children explore the magic (*Ahem* science) of DNA by making DNA Bracelets or Edible DNA and extracting DNA from kiwi fruit at the Genome BC booth or joining the LTS team in making Slime, exploring salmon migration, or running Chromatography Demos.

This event brings lots of families to Science World for a busy, fun and exciting two days, but we’ll need need many volunteers to make this event a success!
When: Saturday, September 16th and/or Sunday, September 17th 9:00am to 6:30pm
Where: Telus World of Science (1455 Quebec Street, Vancouver)

Competition Announcement: Trudeau Doctoral Scholarships

Trudeau Doctoral Scholarships

Value: $40,000 stipend plus $20,000 travel allowance per year, for up to 4 years

UBC applicant deadline: 11:59pm (Vancouver time) on Monday, 23 October 2017

Up to 15 Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year to support doctoral students pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada in the World, and People and their Natural Environment. Trudeau Scholars are highly gifted individuals who are actively engaged in their fields and expected to become leading national and international figures.

Eligibility

·         Candidates must be applying into the first year of a PhD at UBC, or be registered in the first or second year of a PhD at UBC.

·         Although priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, up to one scholar in four per given year may be a foreign national registered full-time in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution. This applies in particular to students from emerging nations.

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) Study Scholarships and Research Grants are available for highly qualified graduate students, PhD candidates, and post-doctoral researchers in all disciplines to study and carry out research at universities or research institutes in Germany. These scholarship provide funds for a period of study and/or research in Germany.
