Connect to Community Grant application now open!

Working on a project to address community needs, but need funding to make it happen? The Connect to Community Grant funds projects up to $1,500 that take place over a two-week to two-month period.

The Centre for Community Engaged Learning grants funding so that you can address community priorities through projects that you design and execute. Build on your experience working with community and get creative with what you can do to address community needs.

Masters of Resource Economics Info Session – Nov 9/10, 2016

The Masters of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE) is hosting two info sessions in November. Join us to learn more about the program!

• Wednesday – Nov 9th, 4:45 – 5:30pm in MCML366
• Thursday – Nov 10th, 4:45 – 5:30pm in BUCH D205

What is MFRE? MFRE is a one year master program: two course based semesters and one summer project. The courses cover the areas of policy analysis, agribusiness, applied economics and quantitative methods.

Please email Shristee (shristee.rahman@ubc.ca) to let us know which session you will be attending, although we welcome your attendance even if you have not RSVP’d. Everyone is welcome!

Offering you the option to pick and choose what activities you want to attend, it’s two days of events to help you identify your passions, generate ideas, teach you new skills, and connect you to peers and professionals who can support your journey. Whether you have a local issue you want to improve, an idea for a start-up you want to get off the ground, or you just want to interact with and learn from the people who’ve done it all before, the Changemaker Showcase has something for you.

Meet the Dietitian Night – Nov 7, 2016

This annual event, hosted by your UBC Dietitians of Canada Student Rep Team, is a great way to learn more about what being a registered dietitian is all about! You will get the opportunity to meet and chat with a variety of registered dietitians that you will be able to assess and rank in advance which ones you would specifically like to connect with. You will also get to meet some current dietetics students.

This is a valuable experience for anyone who is interested in applying for the dietetics program at UBC. The event runs November 7th from 6:30- 8:30pm in MacMillan 360 learning commons.

It is free for DC members and $10 for non-members. The evening will include snacks and a draw prize as well! More information regarding registration will be released in the coming weeks on the event page here – so stay tuned!

Learn about academic stress and brainstorm ways to cope with the demands of your academics! Learn the signs and consequences of burnout, how to prevent it and what to do in case it happens; also, learn the importance of practicing self-care!

Join us on October 17th, an annual speaker series dedicated to global Indigenous rights, made possible by the generosity of John Bell, and presented by the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies and the First Nations House of Learning.

In partnership with CBC and the Laurier Institution, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies and the First Nations House of Learning welcome Chief Wilton Littlechild, Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Dr. Littlechild is a respected lawyer, advocating for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, avidly promoting self-determination and Treaty implementation. Dr. Littlechild has served as the Chairperson for the Commission on First Nations and Métis Peoples and Justice Reform in Saskatchewan. He currently is a Commissioner with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Research Inspiring Students Engagement (RISE) Dinner – Oct 26, 2016

Interested in research? Networking? Speaking with professors and graduate students? Or just exploring your options? Then come to RISE, the Research Inspiring Students Engagement Dinner.

Professors and graduate students from different LFS disciplines will be presenting a snapshot of their research, giving advice, and sharing their stories. From human nutrition and animal welfare to soil science and wine science, there will be a ton to learn at this event brought to you by LFS|US and the LFS ACE Team.

Where: Macmillan Room 158

When: Oct 26 from 4pm to 6pm

The cost of the event itself is free if you don’t plan to stay for the dinner, or if you bring your own meal. Alternatively, if you wish to have a delicious, home-made, and healthy meal made by the Wednesday Night Dinner Team, the cost is just $5!
