LFS|US and My Green Space are hosting a free documentary and discussion series “Food for Thought” starting next Wednesday, October 5th at 6pm in MCML Room 160.

The documentary that will be screened is called “Inhabit”. It introduces permaculture as a design method that can solve a variety of issues related to agriculture, economics, and governance, from an ecological lens. The film is a call to action, and highlights projects, concepts and people that show what is possible with permaculture. Check out the trailer here: http://inhabitfilm.com/

The goal of the documentary and discussion series is to learn about our complex food system, and tangible ways students can improve it by starting conversations about food on campus. They are partnering with LFS|US because they want to engage with the students within the food community at UBC. Support UBC’s Participation in the Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging Competition at Ohio State University – Nov, 2016

Please help support UBC participate in the Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging Competition at Ohio State University this November!

A team of 4 passionate undergraduates are learning how to assess the physical and psychological health of animals on farms, zoos, and in working environments. Through your support, the team will have the opportunity to compete against other schools across North America. This is an exciting way for the team to further their understanding of complex animal welfare issues, improve critical thinking and public speaking skills, and get to meet others interested in the field. To make the trip to Ohio possible, $3000 dollars will need to be raised. Any donations will be greatly appreciated and the team would love to discuss their interests in animal welfare to anyone with interest or questions.

UBC placed 2nd at the competition in 2015, and won the live dairy assessment. UBC hopes to continue this year with similar results!

To assist in sending the team to Ohio to compete, visit their fundraising page:
https://www.gofundme.com/2p84qq3w

The deadline to donate is November 14, 2016.

Presenter Info Night 2017 Student Leadership Conference – Sept 27, 2016

Disrupt the Ordinary at the 2017 Student Leadership Conference (SLC)

The Student Leadership Conference (SLC) may not be until January, but the preparation starts now!  LFS students are encouraged to participate in the SLC as conference attendees, volunteers or presenters.  One of the largest student-run conferences in Canada, this year’s SLC theme “Disrupt Ordinary” encourages students to push boundaries, affect change and create a better future.  No students on campus are better positioned to disrupt ordinary than LFS students, so show UBC what you and your Faculty are all about while developing your own academic, personal and professional skills.

Attend to meet new people and get inspired, volunteer to make a difference and network with other student leaders across campus, or share your story and develop your presentation skills as a presenter.  Who knows!?  You may follow in the footsteps of your peers from “Roots on the Roof” who won “Best Highlighted Project” at the 2016 SLC!  If you want to present, don’t miss the Presenter Info Night next week – Tuesday, September 27 from 6 – 7pm in Henry Angus, Room 292.  Visit their website for all the details and mark your calendars with the October deadlines for volunteer and presenter applications.  You can also visit Karla Carreras, LFS Student Engagement Officer, in LFS Student Services if you have questions (Room 344 in MacMillan, or email karla.carerras@ubc.ca).

2016 Student Leadership Conference – Call out for Presenters, due early Oct 2016

As a Presenter at the SLC, you have a great opportunity to inspire and motivate the many delegates that attend the Conference. Not only will you open the dialogue to many topics, but you can also help be the platform that will inspire action and change.

Workshop Presenter

We are inviting Undergraduate, Graduate, Alumni, Staff, and Faculty to present 50-minute workshops to widen our breadth of workshops and the individuals that the SLC will impact. Through this extended invitation, it is our aim to involve a vast range of views so that students gain as much knowledge and insight as possible.

Workshops play a vital role on the day of the SLC, as delegates are able to directly engage with new skills and ideas, allowing numerous networks to be developed and strengthened. Each of the workshops in this year’s SLC will be categorized into three streams, which are implemented to guide delegates to their most desired outcomes and learning experiences. This year there are three streams of workshops, they include:

  • Amplify – ‘Disrupting’ and Challenging the Self
  • Emerge – ‘Disrupting’ and Challenging Community and Norms
  • Dare – ‘Disrupting’ and Challenging Beyond our Immediate Communities

Workshop applications are due on October 11th, 2016 at 11:59pm.

Highlighted Projects Presenter

Highlighted Project Presenters can share their initiatives through the SLC website and on the day of the conference. Presenters have the opportunity to hone their public speaking, facilitation and networking skills while receiving feedback from a variety of people from diverse backgrounds. It is an opportunity for presenters to engage and connect with delegates in a meaningful way.

Highlighted Projects Presenters will discuss the actions and impact of their organization since its establishment, their next steps, and how to get involved during a 50 minute session.

Highlighted Project applications are due on October 6th at 11:59pm.

For more information about both presenter opportunities and how to apply, please visit the Student Leadership Conference website.
