Digital Citizenship Skills

In such unprecedented moments with more time spent online for learning platforms and surfing news, several skills are required by teachers and students to deal with the complex challenges emerging with the increased use of technology.

Digital Citizenship

  • Digital citizenship is concerned with creating empathetic, active, digital citizens who engage online respectfully, determine the validity of online sources, and using technology to amplify their voices to be heard by public leaders and shape public policy, as described by ISTE CEO.an image of a person sitting at a computer looking at the screen
  • Watch the talk by Richard Culatta, CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education, discussing the Do’s of digital citizenship.
  • ISTE develops standards for students to work in the technological landscape, one of which is related to digital citizenship.
  • According to ISTE, digital citizens recognize the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world and act in ways that are safe, legal, and ethical.
  • Watch ISTE digital citizenship series that includes i) digital footprint, ii) online behavior, iii) intellectual property, and iv) digital privacy.

Resources for teaching digital citizenship

  • A ‘go-to’ resource for teachers is MediaSmarts; Canada’s Centre for digital and media literacy, which includes digital and media literacy fundamentals linked to BC curriculum. MediaSmarts website includes lesson plans and resources to support learning design; searchable by specific provincial and territorial curriculum and also by topic, subject area and grade level.
  • CommonSense offers digital citizenship lesson plans to prepare students to take ownership of their digital lives, including topics on media balance and well being, privacy and security, digital footprint and identity, relationships and communication, cyberbullying, and news and media literacy.
  • Commonsense also provides credible primary and secondary research resources for students and kid-friendly news sites.
  • However, it is a good idea to encourage students to review and compare various news sources and analyze various narratives of one kind of news in order to help them build their Digital Literacy skills.

Interactive games for students

  • Digital Passport (provided by Commonsense) for Grades 3-5 that introduces 6 interactive games related to the use of safe and secure passwords, dangers of multitasking on cellphones, privacy issues when sharing online information, responding to cyberbullying,
  • Conducting effective research online
  • Digital Compass (provided by Commonsense) for grades 6-8, to learn the basics of digital citizenship through a game of 8 characters.
  • Educational games (provided by Media Smarts) that introduce children to key ideas in media and digital literacy

Connecting your class with students around the world

An interesting tool that allows students to put digital citizenship into practice is to set up penpals, Visit this blog post about Penpals schools to learn more about one opportunity. Penpal schools is an online platform that allows international students to connect with students across the globe to discuss global concerns.

A note about Online Safety

Engaging in authentic activities to help students develop their digital citizenship skills, can also support students in learning to engage in safer behaviours while online.  Included in digital citizenship, will be social media etiquette where students need to be aware of, and cautious to avoid. behaviours associated with cyberbullying, such as incitement of hatred, uttering threats, criminal harassment, sending false messages, etc. A few resources linked below:

  • Review the social media guidelines (links to external site) prepared by ERASE Student Advisory in BC for students, teachers, and school staff. 
  • A Surrey School District document titled “Digital Citizens and Social Media” highlights responsible use of information and Communications Technologies highlights the importance of safety, privacy, responsible online citizenship, as well as guidelines related to social networking, online publishing, file sharing, and mobile devices.

Literacies embedded within Digital Citizenship

Digital Literacy

The BC Digital Literacy Framework (links to a post within this blog) provides an overview of the digital literacy skills and strategies that teachers should try to incorporate in their classroom teaching.
MediaSmarts has developed a Digital Literacy Framework (external link) that classifies competencies for digital literacy into three main principles: use, create and understand. Skills fall under 7 key aspects of digital literacy: ethics and empathy, privacy and security, community engagement, digital health, consumer awareness, digital health, consumer awareness, finding and verifying, and making and remixing.

Media Literacy

Media literacy is about critically understanding the nature, techniques, and impacts of media messages and productions. Issues covered by media include body image, gender representation, diversity in media, intellectual property, marketing and consumerism, and violence. Several lessons and resources are provided by Media Smarts for teachers and parents to cover these topics. More details are provided here by Media Smarts on key concepts of media literacy and tips on integrating it in the classroom.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a web communication tool that can be used to facilitate group chats and host meetings. In support of remote teaching and learning, Microsoft currently offers free access to Office 365 (including Teams) for students and teachers. This blog post will highlight specific features of Microsoft Teams and provide information on how to get started.

Some cool features of Microsoft Teams include:

  • Up to 250 participants in a private Teams meeting
  • Unlimited chat and search capabilities
  • Desktop and mobile apps available
  • Join a meeting from anywhere (e.g., Team Calling, Phone System, Calling Plan, Direct Routing Plan)
  • Build-in function to schedule meetings and audio/video calls
  • 10 GB of team file storage and 2 GB of personal file storage
  • Ability to share your screen, a file, a slideshow, and more
  • Background blur that can eliminate distractions and protect privacy
  • Seamless integration of content from Word Docs, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to coauthor and edit shared files in real-time
  • Education-specific features such as attendance report for teachers and raise-hand option for students

What makes Microsoft Teams stand out from other web communication tools is its seamless integration of collaborative features such as group chats, team file storage, and the ability to edit shared files in real time. For teacher candidates and students, Microsoft Teams is more than just a space for online meetings but truly an online classroom that supports group collaboration and participation. With many students already using Word Docs and PowerPoint for school assignments, Microsoft Teams makes it easy for students to share files with group members/teachers and present their work virtually. As well, teachers are able to access the shared files and provide feedback directly.

Assessment for All Learners

As part of any study into current assessment practices, you will want to explore the potential of integrating digital technologies, including multi-modal creation/communication tools and/or student response systems (SRS), into your teaching. These can support a Universal Design for Learning approach (UDL) https://udlguidelines.cast.org/ 

MultiModal creation and communication

When creating an inclusive learning environment and planning for all learners (Universal Design for Learning), it is essential we provide opportunities for voice and choice. If the use of multi-modal response is essential for some learners, then it is good for all learners!  Consider providing access to tools that allow your students to share their ideas using visuals (including video, photos, drawing), text and audio. You might try:

Student representation and expression (assessment of and for learning)

  • Showme and Explain Everything are in a class of apps called ‘digital whiteboards‘ or whiteboard style apps and are great for formative assessment and even for student projects and presentations allowing voice narration, video, images, drawing and typing. I can ask a student to ‘showme’ what they know by asking them to annotate an image, share a video of completing a problem etc. (Students can ‘annotate’ or draw on an image as they record their voice. also allows for scientific notation) * free to download so students can use on their own devices if they wish – NOT Canadian housed so informed consent is important – and/or use of school owned devices with no account sign up.
  • Flip Gridcreating and sharing videos in a Microsoft learning tools environment (NB: many coast metro school districts use FlipGrid and other MSoft tools) or set up your own free teacher account, add students (using first name only or avatar names to protect privacy) and provide students with a join code/QR code (check for indiv school/district permissions). Allows the teacher to moderate posts!
  • Concept mapping is a powerful tool for illustrating complex links between ideas (be they images or text). Many softwares allow for hyperlinking and embedding images and video. Mindmup is a browser based application that allows co-creation of a concept map across time and space (NB: co-creation seems to now be a paid level of access – I’m trying to find another option… Schools/Districts using Google Classroom will have co-creation access)
  • ePortfolios provide rich opportunities for students to select, evaluate and share products of, and reflections on, their learning. Freshgrade is a Canadian housed/FIPPA compliant platform teachers can access for free. Several BC school districts (and beyond) have paid accounts so students can be ‘auto enrolled’. Parents can also be given access. MyBlueprint has also being adopted in some local school districts – All About Me for K-6 and Education Planner for 7 – 12.

All-Class Response and Student Response Systems (SRS)

Educators and researchers have long considered the benefits of students actively engaging in the classroom and how this can lead to gains in student learning. One way to achieve such engagement is by effectively incorporating all-class response (links to NWEA.org) or a student response system (SRS) as a part of your classroom assessment approach. It is important to consider the benefits and the potential drawbacks of various systems available to you as a K-12 educator in order to select one that meets your (and your students’) needs.

Be sure to keep in mind that the efficacy of any student response system depends on the quality of the questions and how you use the system. You will learn, as part of your course work, how to develop effective selection and supply questions (multiple choice). This work will be helpful in selecting an SRS and constructing a poll or quiz for formative or summative assessment. While these questions should not form the basis of your overall assessment, they can be one piece of the puzzle and can support formative (and sometimes summative) assessment. In particular, as discussed, using an effective discussion strategy (links to Cult of Pedagogy blog) will increase the value of an SRS.

Some issues to consider when engaging your students with digital technologies and online learning:

  • BYOD and Access – bring your own device – Are there policies in place in my school or rules in my classroom to consider? What about students who do not have access to a device? When pairing or grouping students and expecting one device in a group, do you know if the student who owns that device is willing to share it OR are there devices in the school you can borrow? What impact does it have on students when they do not have the same access as others?
  • FIPPA – Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection act – Students data should not be shared on non-Canadian housed servers… Am I protecting students data privacy? Do I have necessary permissions or consent? Am I engaging my students in critical digital literacy discussion around privacy & safety in a broader sense? School Districts will have policies in place that meet the informed consent requirements of FIPPA. Be aware of local policies. (See this helpful guide from BCTF to support teachers and parents)

All class response (vs. hands up/volunteers), including the use of a digital student response system (SRS) can  lead to greater student engagement. Read this article in Educause describing how the efficacy of assessments and increases in student learning are achieved when an SRS is coupled with socio-constructivist methods (links to edutechwiki). The use of these systems along with student discussion, peer teaching and pair share can also lead to greater student satisfaction and engagement. All class response is in keeping with a large body of research supporting more inclusive approaches to assessment (links to sagepub.com)

Chapter 4 of Leahy and Williams’, Embedding Formative Assessment (google book result), makes a case of ‘all student response’ and limiting teacher questions to only those that propel learning. This book is a valuable addition to any teacher’s library and clearly links theory with practical strategies and relevant advice. (UBC Library has a copy)

The notion that engaging the ‘backchannel’ (commonsense.org) during lectures and classes can add a more active component to what are sometimes more passive forms of teaching is taking hold with the growth in BYOD (bring your own device) in secondary and post-secondary classrooms. By allowing students to voice their ideas or ask questions during a lecture or class work period using electronic tools such as those built into most learning management systems and widely available free online, you are providing opportunities for students to ask just-in time questions, share thoughts and connect with one another; potentially increasing student engagement and learning. These potential benefits come with ‘management’ needs and requires the development of a set of expectations in the classroom that student can follow. This can take time, usually involves some trial and error but is a risk that may be worth taking when one considers the increase in student agency that can result from the moderate risk. The value of anonymous responses… We know that adolescent learners appreciate, or some would even say require, the opportunity to participate anonymously. Due to their sometimes heavy reliance on peer approval, students at this age can be reluctant to share their views orally. For this reason, employing an SRS can give voice to quieter learners and generate more honest responses. Of course, anonymity comes with drawbacks so be sure to consider the following:

  • How are responses published, shared or viewed?
  • Can I moderate responses? (i.e. can I see them and approve them before they are ‘live’ to the students)
  • Can students change their responses or provide multiple responses?
  • Can I archive or track student responses in some way? (do I need to?)
  • How will I respond if a student posts an inappropriate response?
  • How can I create a class climate the promotes risk taking and accountability?
    • consider small group response vs. individual response – students discuss their ideas and, using one device for the group, record their response… this can lessen the potential for inappropriate responses especially where the teacher is actively engaged in/with the class by circulating and checking in.

Student Response Systems: getting started with resources on the Scarfe Digital Sandbox

  • Mentimeter – polling software that allows for various types of response and graphical representations (plot graphs, bar graph, word cloud, tiled short answer response)
  • Plickers – all you need are free printable scan cards, a teacher account and one mobile device to record and track responses
    • iClickers – a Mac and PC set are available on loan in the Education Library
  • Poll Everywhere – students answer poll questions using browser, mobile app or text response
  • Socrative – create a class account to track responses, students answer using browser or mobile app
  • Answer Garden – instantly generates a word cloud of responses, no account needed
  • Kahoot – gameify learning in your classroom with ‘Kahoots’
  • Padlet – this multi-modal response digital wall is great for brainstorming, checks for understanding and formative assessment (and now includes ability to add audio and drawing in addition to text, hyperlinks, video, images)

WKTP: Assessing and Implementing Digital Technologies

I’ve had the opportunity to work with many of our on campus students here at UBC Vancouver to help them learn to effectively select a digital technology and appropriate teaching strategy. This week, I had the privilege of meeting with WKTP (West Kootenays Teacher Ed Program) candidates in Nelson via web conference to answer their questions and support them in selecting technologies to support teaching and learning. They are preparing their inquiry presentations and will be presenting using a digital gallery-style walk so are looking for unique ways to present.

Another important aspect of our conversation was to connect to their practicum planning and how they might effectively integrate digital technologies in their teaching contexts.  Considering how their students might be supported through or with digital technologies has tremendous value in learning design. To this end, our session was framed around  Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the SAMR model by Ruben Puentedura. I also suggested to the TCs that when teachers consult the BC Digital Literacy Framework as part of planning for instruction, they will recognize that learning about, with and through digital technologies is an important part of teaching and learning in today’s classroom.

During the session, students experienced and viewed some examples of digital technology integration and were then provided with a little time to identify resources (in this blog or otherwise) that might support their learning and teaching objectives. We looked at several examples of how various presentation and creation tools might support sharing their inquiry and discussed how many of these same tools might provide excellent opportunities for their own students to develop presentations.

  • Blogs to help develop and share inquiry.
    • We’ve created some tutorial videos if you are using UBC Blogs and as mentioned, if you decide to set up a UBC Blog, we can talk you through any difficulties you encounter. Please be in touch. In particular, you’ll want to consider privacy settings, blog design (use of pages/posts) and any interaction you’d like to incorporate (is it a static website or do you want active commenting and posting?)
    • You will continue to have access as long as you have a CWL (so even as alumni).
    • Canadian housed, secure server – FIPPA (freedom of information, privacy protection act) compliant.
  • AR/VR including Thinglink, Google Tour Creator, Tour Builder. (Search the Scarfe Digital Sandbox Resources and filter by AR/VR.). Here is an example of an inquiry presentation by a UBC Van TC using Insta360 VR (shared with permission). NB: I am currently reluctant about VR with younger learners given the lack of research into the effects. If viewing 360 content, I recommend they do so on a browser or ipad vs. using ‘goggles’.
  • Social Media platforms such as Twitter & Instagram. Here is an example of an inquiry presentation by a group of UBC Van TCs using Tumblr (shared with permission)
  • Multimodal Creation – supportive of UDL (providing students with multiple means of representation and expression)
    • SHOWME interactive whiteboard – I ask my students to ‘show me’ what they know about… to which they can draw, annotate, write, import images, narrate… There are other digital whiteboard apps available. Aww App is a browser based tool that is a little more limited but has some potential for classroom collaboration.
    • Padlet another digital whiteboard that allows audio, text, hyperlinks and drawing – don’t forget to moderate your board if you use it in a classroom!! ;D and notice that commenting can be done without approval so you should consider carefully if you want to allow commenting.
  • MindMapping has tremendous potential for supporting critical thinking and would make a unique inquiry presentation that a visitor could view and click on links to resources etc.
    • Mindmup (visual brainstorming tool that can be collaborated on – free and shareable)
    • Prezi might be used to create an even more interactive map.

Next, we utilized the SAMR model to help evaluate the learning potential of digital resources. It is important to note that a model such as SAMR only has value if one considers the context (of the school, classroom, and child) in the selection and evaluation. For example, students viewed a video of a child who, without access to digital technologies, may not have been able to share the depth of her understanding. In this way, even a substitution approach might make all the difference for individual learning.


Additional resources and questions from our session:

  1. All-Student Response and Backchannel chat – providing adolescent learners anonymous opportunities to engage, voice their ideas, opinions, questions and understandings while providing teachers with the opportunity to gather data to inform teaching (and, potentially, strengthening or stretching student understanding). Remember, it is beneficial to incorporate discussion strategies (such as peer-teaching) when using all-student response.
    • Plickers – a low tech to no tech response system with free downloadable cards and app. The teacher sets up a free account online and then ‘gathers’ responses by scanning the room with the plickers app on their device. The plickers app acts like a QR code scanner and gathers student responses. It was interesting to me that one TC suggested having students hold the card in front of their faces if there are concerns about plickers accessing the camera on your device. This reminds us that it is always important to be mindful of student privacy and what we decide to ‘trust’…
    • Mentimeter (backchannel chat, all class response, polling etc). One TC remarked that once they accessed mentimeter, they were already receiving targeted ads – I haven’t found that this has impacted my own social media but, again, a good reminder about privacy and making decisions carefully about what you choose to bring into your classroom. Perhaps ensure location services are off for the app? other suggestions?
  2. Some tech tools and approaches shared by TCs via our ongoing discussion in our Mentimeter Backchannel
    1. Youtube in the Classroom? Remember to keep in mind that pop up ads can interrupt learning and influence learners in ways that may not be supportive. Try using the Quiettube extension, have an Adblock installed, or try Teachertube or ERAC and School District streaming resources such as Learn360 instead.
    2. Flipgrid – a US Application but read this Canadian Teacher’s alternative
  3. Responses to a few questions from our Backchannel Chat:
    • Privacy and Inquiry sharing: if the inquiry is focused on you and doesn’t contain any reference to students or recognizable images of students, then you should be fine to share it online if that is something you (personally) are comfortable with. I actually recommend TCs do so when they can as this helps to begin to develop a professional presence online. You are searchable so having people actually find professional content about you can be valuable. NB: if your inquiry refers even generally to your observations on practicum that might in any way identify a school or students, I recommend removing such content. Happy to review and chat further about this. I taught the Inquiry course for several years…
    • Issues of advertising and education: One student asked “How can we avoid the lamprey eels of advertising… with companies buying their way into schools”. I am glad TCs are asking these important questions. As we know, very little (if anything) is actually free. We need to be mindful of data privacy and advertising and how this can impact perception. I’m afraid I don’t have one answer for this question (that would make an excellent TC inquiry!) but can speak from my own experience. Perhaps even more importantly, we need to help our students become aware of the advertising they are continually bombarded with… they need to learn to ask critical questions and recognize the issues around consumerism/consumption. MediaSmarts is a non-profit project that provides some lessons & resources that you might consider incorporating into your teaching.
      • Personally and professionally, I do not buy into the idea of promoting a specific company or product. When I share links to various resources on this site, I do so because I have (or one of my colleagues has) found them to have potential use in teaching and learning. We do some reviewing and testing and then provide a write up and links so that others might try them as well. Typically, these write ups are positive given we try to carefully curate what we include… I do not create posts based on ads that are targeted at me or email/spam or other requests from companies that come my way, nor do I take ‘kickbacks’ or ‘freebies’ from companies. I have also chosen to avoid becoming “X certified” or an “X master educator” (fill in the X as you wish!). There are many different perspectives on this and I am only speaking personally (and not knocking anyone else’s choice!) and I completely ‘get’ the value that a teacher might bring to their school by connecting with a company…
    • Digital Tech and Primary Education: “How might I incorporate digital technology in my primary classroom? Does it mean going to the computer lab more often?” I was a primary school teacher for over half of my 25 year teaching career and found great value in incorporating digital technologies in learning experiences. Over this time there was, obviously, varied access to digital tools and so I recognize the complexity. As discussed, digital tech integration is so dependent on the access you have in your school and classroom. If you want to discuss a specific Unit or context, I’d be happy to chat.
      • One thing I can suggest (in keeping with the Canadian Pediatric Guidelines ) is to avoid having students spend screen time on ‘consumptive’ apps and, instead, spend time creating using applications. Spend time together (with teacher, parent, other students) vs. one to one computing – to increase oral communication, critical thinking and problem solving. When students are creating using digital technologies, remember to incorporate discussion and lessons to support critical digital and media literacy (again, MediaSmarts has some resources). How will our children learn the benefits and pitfalls of the digital world if we don’t take this up in our classrooms?

Word Clouds

A word cloud is a cluster of words that responsively shows most used words as larger or more pronounced that lesser used words. It is a form of data visualization sometimes called ‘text’ or ‘tag’ clouds. You sometimes see a word cloud to represent the tags used for posts on a blog.

A word cloud allows you to represent the most important or most used information in a single graphic. One might create a word cloud using a paragraph or two of text in order to visually tease out relevant information or you might use a word cloud to represent the results of a brainstorm or group discussion.

Word clouds are excellent for visualizing the attributes of a character, the key points in a plot or features of a civilization. I’ve even used word clouds as a way of having students share their observations of a particular place, field trip location or image/video. Word clouds also make fun gifts… have a group of people share words to describe someone they wish to thank, then share the cloud with the recipient! Perfect for framing! Depending on your purpose, there will be a ‘tool for you’!

Steps:

  • Determine your purpose or objectives
  • Select a tool that meets your needs
    • Keep in mind data privacy as you make your selection – avoid tools that require personal information or login.
    • If you want multiple people/students to add to the word cloud, select an all class response tool that allows co-creation.
  • Add your text and create. In most Word Cloud applications, you can also manipulate the text to an extent using themes, colours, font, orientation, shape. Typically, you can also limit the number of words and eliminate select words.

Co-creation tools (multiple people can add words to a single cloud in real time):

    • Answer Garden – this is a student response system (no login required) where you can launch a particular question for a brainstorm, gather responses from a group and a word cloud is autogenerated.
      • A quick and visual way to share the results of a brainstorm!
      • No sign up needed (by teacher or students).
      • Teacher can set up an Admin password and make various adjustments/moderate resposnes.
      • The ‘AnswerGarden’ can be embedded in a Canvas page (find embed code in ‘share’ settings)
      • Students can access and respond from within Canvas.
      • Drawback: When using the direct link to the ‘garden’, there are large banner ads. These do not appear in the Canvas embed.
    • MentiMeter – is quite a powerful all class or student response system.
      • allows multiple question types and a variety of data visualization options (scatter plot, bar graphs, charts, text bubbles, word cloud and more).
      • Menti requires teacher sign up but no student sign up.
      • The Menti ‘live presentation’ can be embedded in Canvas.
      • Drawback: Students access and contribute via menti.com using a join code (not directly in Canvas)

Individual Tools (copy and paste a block of text to create a word cloud):

  • WordSift.org is my preferred site since it was created and is maintained by a Stanford grad student and is the result of a grant project linked to an academic institution! They even include a ‘theory’ section including references and several useful teaching tips on their website. With WordSift, users can upload/paste text, create and manipulate word clouds and capture the results in moments. It has an intuitive interface with no login required and plenty of tutorial info. There is so much potential here for the creative user or educator! Once created, select on an individual word to see a visual map thesaurus (much like ThinkMap above!), see words ‘in context’, definitions and images. Use the settings wheel to adjust number of words, orientation & more.
  • WordClouds.com allows you to paste a block of text to create a custom word cloud. The cloud can be ‘masked’ with a visible shape or ‘unmasked’ (without a border or visible shape). When you arrive at wordclouds.com, select File, New Word Cloud –> File, Paste/type text (or import from URL or file upload!)

Unique uses of WordClouds for visualization:

  • ThinkMap Visual Thesaurus: Word clouds or maps autogenerated when you enter a word into the thesaurus! (free trial only or paid subscription needed)

Verbally: Text-to-Speech

Verbally is a convenient, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), text-to-speech app that can be used to help your students with challenges in communication. Currently (August 2017) it is only available for iPad and iPhone. With Verbally, your students can either choose from the word clouds provided to create sentences or they can type in a sentence. After the sentence has been inputted, the app will read it out loud.

Free features include:

  • Core Words Grid – contains 50 essential words to save you time when inputting your sentences
  • Core Phrases Grid – offers common phrases to enable faster and easier conversation
  • Text Prediction – the app learns the words you use and makes self-expression easier
  • Choice of male or female voice.
  • Steady Hands feature – if your students have limited motor abilities, this feature makes it easier to type

  • 3 new voices to choose from (1 male, 1 female, and 1 child’s voice)
  • Customize your own phrases and save them as your favourite
  • Personalize your predictions
  • Find what you want to say from past phrases spoken
  • Connect through email and compose your email with Verbally

As a teacher, it is important that you can ensure that your students with different learning styles and disabilities such as selective mutism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have the opportunity to communicate with you and their classmates. With Verbally, they can easily communicate and engage in the classroom.

  1. Download the app on your iPad or iPhone from the iTunes store.
  2. Go to “Settings”, and set up important components such as the voice, keyboard, and predictions you would like to use.
  3. Test out the app by choosing words from the word collection or type in the sentence that you would like it to say.
  4. Click on “Speak”.
