Gemba: The Japanese Word Defining Management

Western management styles tend to digest knowledge and solve problems in the boardroom. In Japan, managers tend to do things a little differently. In Japan, managers go to the gemba.

Not to be confused with the sports media and marketing company owned by Australian football player James Hird. Gemba, is a Japanese word that translates to ‘the real place’.

As this article explains, the concept of gemba, allows management to get out into the workplace and observe the workers in action. By performing a ‘gemba walk’ management strengthen the channels of communication between themselves and employees, and can witness the day to day operations first hand.

The idea was popularized by Taiichi Ono, Japanese businessman and father of the Toyota Production System. Ono believed regularly visiting the factory floor would help managers to find innovative ways to improve the company’s products and processes.

Three simple instructions; Go see, ask why, and give respect, were the mantra for Toyota managers. This saying was coined by former chairman, Fuji Cho, and by adopting this strategy they built one of the most successful companies in the automotive industry, with consistently high customer satisfaction ratings to this day.

Since then, all manner of successful companies from small local businesses, to multimillion dollar corporations like Dr. Pepper, have adopted gemba as a core concept of their management style.

Adopting the idea of gemba is all about shifting your management style from a mindset, to action, and proponents of lean management are vocal advocates for the benefits that this more hands-on approach can bring. A gemba walk around the office, factory floor or shopfront provides the opportunity to connect directly with customers and employees, rather than reading everything in a report, as well as monitor for any waste in areas like processing, production, defects and non-utilized talent. By breaking down the barriers between management and the people they manage, it gives employees more confidence to speak out about problems or issues they see, and suggest potential solutions. It also has the bonus of increasing your visibility amongst the workforce, which can provide a boost to both morale and discipline.

When you do finally get out there, it’s important to remember that the gemba walk is a time to learn about how the work is done, so try to avoid latching on to minor problems and proposing on the fly solutions which might impede staff’s ability to do their job. Instead, reflect on your observations and then allocate some time to talk with the team about them.

Most experts advice setting aside a small amount of time each week to actually get out and interact at the place where value is created for your customers. No matter the size of your business, a management principle that gets you engaged with your workforce and your target market, is going to be to your benefit. There is no better way to increase that value than by making sure everyone is involved in improving.

5 Startups That Are Making Medical Breakthroughs Seem Easy

Healthcare presents one of the biggest frustrations for customers but for forward thinking companies, it can also provide some of the largest opportunities. The size of the market and the chance to impact the lives of people are almost extraordinary. Last year, investors and venture capitalists poured $12.2 billion into the healthcare industry, according to a report by Silicon Valley Bank. Here are some to watch out for.

Maven

Maven is provides women and their families with healthcare via its digital care platform of online clinics. Their funding has now totaled more than $15 million. It launched in 2015 and has had almost 100,000 patients. They have nearly a thousand medical practioners.

Interested patients can book appointments using video or messages to a large network of women’s health and maternity services. It includes midwives, therapists, OB-GYNs, dieticians and others. Their medical team is available 24/77

Maven already operates an on-demand marketplace with Maven Maternity Maven Maternity. It is utilized by top companies throughout the U.S., including Protective Life Corporation and Snap. They support new parents from conception to the pregnancy, postpartum issues and also transitioning back to the workplace.

Augmedix

Augmedix uses Google Glass technology to create tools to increase a doctor’s productivity. They have gained $23 million funding from OrbiMed and McKesson Ventures, among others. Their main product is their remote scribe technology which uses Google Glass. It seeks to help doctors cope with their huge documentation and charting requirements. It would free them up to see more patients and foster better relationships with them.

They have developed the biggest remote scribe service so far in the world. It is built from a safe and protected enterprise platform. It has been installed in some of the largest healthcare systems in the U.S. Augmedix complements staffing, quality assurance, network support, analytics and business processing improvements.

Flatiron Health

Flatiron Health was founded by Nat Turner and Zach Weinberg in 2012 after they sold their first company to Google. Turner’s seven-year old cousin was diagnosed with leukemia a few years earlier. It was during his cousin’s cancer treatment when he saw the fragmented healthcare system firsthand.   He and his partner sought a lofty goal. They wanted to combine the smartest people in medicine with leading edge technology to change the way cancer is treated.

Most of the available clinical data on cancer is not structured and kept across thousands of community clinics and hospitals that are not connected. They felt they could solve this problem. Their oncology-specific workflows and products like DocSearch were created to reduce minutes of workflow down to seconds.

PeraHealth

PeraHealth creates clinical surveillance technology that is predictive. It has $14 million in funding from Mainsail Partners, an equity firm. They used it to build clinical tools, and spur adoption efforts as well as R&D.

It is in use at around 80 hospitals such as in Houston Methodist and the Yale New Haven Health System. PeraHealth integrates with electronic health records (EHR) to improve bed assignment and nursing assignments, clinical documentation, discharge plans and more. They developed an index and scoring system that can help manage illnesses by helping doctors spot patients who are most in need of early interventions.

Biolectrics

Biolectrics is a dental health startup that creates medical products. They combine medical, biological and electrical research to create new technologies to treat gum disease using a family of dental health devices called OraFlow.

Dentists who want to whiten their patients’ teeth could use hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening gel, but devices to treat gum disease such as periodontal disease were limited. Their first generation product was similar to a mouth guard that was attached to an electronic controller. It was designed to help dentists by giving them a take-home dental care device that would complement their existing procedures.

Biolectrics has completed testing the OraFlow devices at Case Western Reserved University. Clinical trials are being designed and managed by the Center for Dental Studies, University of Buffalo, New York.

5 must-have technologies for a home entertainment system

[Disclaimer: This is an uncensored and unedited article submitted by a student at UBC. A home theater should provide a high quality video and audio experience with the added comfort of sitting on your favorite couch. Make some popcorn and pour a glass of soda, it’s about to get real.

Wireless HDMI Kit

This kit will help you transmit HQ picture and sound through walls, floors, and even ceilings. You don’t have to worry about tripping over long cables going to the bathroom in the middle of a movie. This system consists of a wireless HDMI transmitter and receiver that transfers the image and sound signals of high quality. It can wirelessly connect a range of multimedia devices such as PC, Blu-Ray player, Gaming station to the TV screen, monitor or projector.

Speaker System

Bulky and tall speakers used to be popular but nowadays it has transformed to more compact and portable devices. Enabled by wireless technology, you can now carry your speaker system to the porch, the balcony, your car – basically anywhere. Beautiful speakers without complicated aspects and inexpensive prices, you can experience sound as it comes in all directions, just like sitting in a movie theatre.

Universal remote

For some reason, my grandfather had two remotes for his television. Remote A was for turning it on and Remote B was for controlling the volume. If one was wedged in between couch cushions, we had to turn the house upside down to find it. Don’t follow our example. A universal remote is basically having one remote to control everything in your home theater. Convenient and easy to use, this product is a must-have.

Smart-home lighting

With the right system in place, smart lighting can allow you to set the mood you want, save energy, act as motion alerts or even automatically adjust according to the time of day. You can schedule lights to turn on as you are walking in from work. Different lightings are needed for reading, homework, watching a movie or dinner for two. Many smart bulbs are so high-tech that standard light sockets can be connected through WiFi. Now grab your universal remote (see above) and adjust the connected lighting to your needs and wants.

Wireless headphones

If you have a roommate who sleeps early and is not prone to loud noises, wireless headphones are your best bet. While soundproofing a room is difficult and expensive, you can enjoy your home entertainment system without bothering anyone else. It even allows you to leave the room to grab your popcorn in the microwave while still experiencing the movie.

You are now one step closer to watching the movies you want and when you want at home. I recommend heading over to a site Best Advisor to compare reviews and settle for the product you think is best for your budget and the size of your room.

5 Modern Technologies That Are Changing the Face of Pest Control

Nocturnal predators such as wolves and coyotes can cause significant damage to our properties, but few things are as traumatizing as the sudden sight of a roach on your kitchen floor during your midnight trips to the fridge. Whatever your pest enemies are, here’s a list of technologies that help us compensate for our awkward position on the food chain throne.

Predator Deterrent Lights

Predator lights are designed to scare away nocturnal animals that usually raid livestock areas, orchards, vineyards, trash bins and other property areas. Most of them are solar-powered and can be mounted on different surface areas using internal magnets or screws. The device works by random flashing patterns to scare away predators, providing a human solution to nocturnal predator raids.

Solar Powered Mole Repeller

Moles are oftentimes the primary culprit for damage to lawns and gardens. The ground-dwelling species feed on insects instead of plants, but create elaborate tunnels underground that can ruin your garden and allow other pests to access to your plants. An effective tool to keep them off your gardens is the solar repeller. The device scares critters away with an ultrasonic alarm sound undetectable to human ears. It uses solar energy to charge its batteries during the day and emits an infrared ray of light that detects motion anytime a mole crosses the beam at night.

Dynatrap

Pesky mosquitoes are summertime’s unwelcome guests. While most of them don’t carry diseases, they can get in the way of you enjoying your camping adventures or pool barbecues. Bug sprays or lotions can be effective but are filled with chemicals, and zappers can be noisy. Dynatrap is a technology-driven insect trap that protects against mosquitoes and other bugs such as wasps, moths, and biting flies. The device is affordable, chemical and pesticide free, and environmentally friendly. It uses UV light and carbon dioxide to mimic the presence of human beings and attract predatory insects. Its silent fan then vacuums the insects into a retaining cage where they dehydrate and die.

Electronic Pest Repeller

The Electronic pest repeller uses a powerful combination of electromagnetic, ultrasonic, and ionic technologies to safely and ecologically keep pests away from your home. A range of different products are available including roach killers, and others that cover a wide variety of pests including mice, spiders, ants, ticks, mosquitoes, even scorpions, bats and more. The products are designed to reach deep into walls, ceilings, baseboards, cabinets, floors, attics and many other places. This is useful since 90% of pests nest and breed within the walls.

Cold Fogger

A ULV fogger uses cold fogging techniques to control different types of insects and pests where hygiene is a concern such as schools, hotels, hospitals, canteens and greenhouses. They produce practically invisible fog using motors that produce low pressure air steam. A fogging solution is stored into a tank and get pumped into a nozzle that gives the air flow a swirling motion. Cold foggers can be used indoors and outdoors but tend to be a little more costly for personal use compared to thermal foggers.

How to Find the Perfect App Developer

If you want to build an app for your startup or business, you will first need to find a really good app developer who can deliver exactly what you need. Building an app is not like building a website, where you can simply use DIY website builders. Finding the right app developer could be a lengthy process. So, know the following things about choosing a good developer so you know what to do without wasting time:

Check Out Previous Work

If you have an app developer in mind, check out the previous work he or she has done before you call. You can go to the app marketplaces for iOS or Android and download the apps to make sure they are any good. If you are hiring from an app development firm, go to the company’s website and check out the portfolio. It should show the type of apps the company has developed. It will give you a good idea whether the app developer is actually a good fit to deliver your expectations for the app.

Call on References

As you would when hiring a regular employee, you must check out the references of an app developer. Most individuals and companies include these in the resume or portfolio. Don’t be impressed by seeing a famous name on the list. Call up the references and get a recommendation before you hire the developer. If you hear much positive feedback from multiple references, then the app developer must be doing something right.

Check Out Online Reviews and Directories

Some app developers are listed on online directories, and some are even rated online. Check out these ratings and read the reviews in addition to calling on references. Do not judge the app developer solely based on online reviews. They could be written by anyone. But do use these reviews in an comprehensive analysis before hiring an app developer.

Ask for Sample Work

Developing an app as a sample is not an easy task. But, if possible, ask the app developer to do a small task for you. This should indicate what working with the person would be like. So, once you have narrowed down your list, sample work could be the defining factor.

Make Sure the Developer with Familiar with the Platform You Want for Your App

The app developer should be very familiar with the type of device and platform you want the app to be on. App developers specialise on android, iOS or crossplatform software. If you want an app for both Android and iOS devices, you need to hire a crossplatform developer who use generic type of coding. On the other hand, if you want the app to be available on Apple Watch you will need a developer who is very familiar with iOS and watchOS platforms. Clarify this before you hire.

Ask about Development Stage Work

There are different ways app developers works. Some only design the user interface for the app to make it appealing to the masses. Other developers do the hard coding that makes the app possible. Some companies or individuals charge additionally for one stage of work. You should probably hire a developer who can give you a single quote for all work involved for the sale of convenience and getting things done on time.

Also, the developers should have the right resources to test the app before launching. Once all this criteria had been met, you will be able to hire the right developer for your company’s app.

Promising Tech Startups That Crumpled Into Bankruptcy in 2016-17

[Disclaimer: This is an uncensored and unedited article submitted by a student at UBC. Nothing can be more upsetting than promising startups collapsing into bankruptcy. Often a lack of farsightedness from the founders leads to such fateful consequences. Exorbitant marketing campaigns, hasty expansions and sloppy fiscal structures are some of the main reasons behind startups getting bankrupt. As stated by a veteran Scottsdale Bankruptcy Attorney, failure to comply with set business and operational standards (ending in expensive lawsuits) is another big reason for company bankruptcy. Below is a list of 4 promising tech startups that collapsed into bankruptcy in recent times.

Powa Technologies

Powa’s failure last year was a huge blow to the UK tech commerce scene. It’s tragic how a promising unicorn that was destined to become a tech giants ended up succumbing to bankruptcy. Powa developed mobile payment apps & POS terminals. It boasted a valuation of $2.7 million just two months before going bankrupt. Unfortunately, the startup was unable to impress customers and failed to raise the capital needed to keep the firm running. There was possibly no other way out and Powa declared bankruptcy in February 2016.

PopExpert

Another major tech startup to file for bankruptcy in 2016 was PopExpert. The company was a EduTech startup that worked to connect people with music teachers, career guides and other educational pros. It was fast gaining traction in the market, raising a whopping $2 million+ in seed funding. However, according to PopExpert officials, it was the controversial regime of their CEO Ingrid Sanders that spelt doom for the company. After 11 months of struggle, PopExpert finally filed for bankruptcy in April 2016. Ironically, Sanders was acknowledged as one of the 13 most influential women in modern tech world that same year.

Jumio

Delaware-based Jumio was yet another prospective startup to file for bankruptcy in 2016. The company developed ID verification technology and had backing from Facebook Co-founder Eduardo Saverin. According to sources, Jumio had financial issues since 2013 due to poor management decisions that finally led to its voluntary declaration of bankruptcy. The company is now owned by its high-profile backer Saverin and the new entity is now known as “Jumio Acquisitions LLC.

Dart Music Inc.

Another tech startup to file for bankruptcy this year is Dart Music Inc. It was a Nashville-based music-tech endeavor that aimed to foster digital distribution of classical music. The concept took the music scene by storm, which helped the company raise $1.5 million seed funding in 2015. However, Dart Music suffered a serious decline in revenue and eventually filed bankruptcy in February 2017. The company’s lack of negotiating capacities with stake holders was another major reason behind its failure. The good news is that Dart Music still has many assets to liquidate.

Why UBC MBA Students Should Be Taking 5S Lean Training

A committed business professional is accountable for the efficient management of their entire workplace. Business management calls for a robust understanding of pragmatic organizing of the office, with categorical sorting of necessities and removal of unwanted waste. It also involves strong supervision to check that the steps taken for effective organization in the workplace are being religiously followed. This is where seasoned management executives stress on 5s Lean training for MBA students. A robust know-how of 5S helps a manager to upgrade quality, improve factory up-time, lower operational costs and promote safety in their office. Implementation of this methodology also helps to boost customer & employee confidence, thereby increasing profit margins. It’s therefore only natural that employers all over are looking for MBA degree holders with additional 5s Lean certification.

5s Lean Training is not included in the regular MBA curriculum of UBC. You have to take it alongside your MBA from a 5s Lean manufacturing method training institute. Let’s explore what the 5s Lean methodology is:

A brief overview

The 5s Lean method was first implemented by legendary Japanese automobile giant Toyota. The basic principle of the method is the creation of efficiency and value across the entire workplace through efficient organization. It is achieved through identification, analysis, collaboration & search for unwanted waste and its effective removal. 5S focuses on a systematic approach to keep the whole workplace neat and clutter-free, in order to ensure a more proficient execution of operational processes.

The 5 “S”

The particular lean methodology is developed on the basic framework of 5 “S”s. These are:

  • Seiri (Sort) – Meticulous sorting of everything in the organization to see what’s needed and what’s not.
  • Seiton (Set things in order) – Proper arrangement of necessities in designated locations with labeling. This helps locate required things easily when they are needed.
  • Seiso (Shine) – Cleaning of all equipments and the entire office regularly to check defects and maintain safety & cleanliness standards.
  • Seiketsu (Standardize) – Creating rules for proper execution of the above mentioned 3S.
  • Shitsuke (Sustain) – Carrying of frequent reviews to see how much the rules are being implemented and to identify any loopholes or limitations.

How 5s Lean certified MBA professionals help the businesses?

  • Effective management and usage of essential office resources like time, space, money and energy;
  • Reduction of obstacles in the workflow;
  • Improvement of productivity and production quality;
  • Faster delivery of orders;
  • Assurance of a clean and safe environment across the office;
  • Strong control on workplace standards, which will help identify issues on time that might otherwise deteriorate the standards;
  • Boosted employee morale with assurance of safe working conditions

Problems 5s Lean pros can avoid for a business

  • Overcrowding in the factory or workplace that might otherwise make working conditions harder for employees;
  • Overloading of inventory with unnecessary stuff that prevents smooth flow of operations and communication across the office or plant;
  • Dirty and disorganized workplace;
  • Time wasted in searching for tools and parts;
  • Higher costs wasted on maintaining unwanted machinery or tools;
  • Accidents from slip/trip and fall in the workplace;
  • Wastage arising due to defective products, accidents resulting from an unsafe working environment, and delay in searching for required tools;
  • Breakdown of machineries and equipments due to lack of maintenance and supervision

Though the 5s Lean methodology is primarily used for manufacturing sectors and industrial plants, it can be used for any workplace, regardless of the industry. Thus, 5s Lean certification will help UBC’s MBA trainees to attain a coveted and respected career in any kind of business.

Losing Your Computer’s Data Isn’t the End of the World

[Disclaimer: This is an uncensored and unedited article submitted by a student at UBC. We have experienced recent cases of students publishing articles on TechNut that contain subtle advertisements, spam and offensive content. In those cases, we removed the articles promptly thanks to whistleblowing from our blog subscribers. Imagine this: you’re putting together an important document for work or school on your PC and you’re just finishing up with your closing sentence. You’re looking forward to finally getting finished, when suddenly, you have a power outage and the next thing you know, your computer has been switched off. When you finally reboot it, the first thing that you notice is that the important file you’ve been working so hard on has completely gone.

This is something that most of us have experienced – maybe you forgot to save a document before your computer’s battery died, or perhaps you were tapping away at an assignment when your coffee mug went flying, sending the coffee all over your screen and keyboard, rendering your laptop useless. Perhaps you were compiling something on your smartphone when you dropped it, smashing it into smithereens. It can happen! Luckily, data isn’t always lost forever – there are methods of getting it back. All you will need to do is find a good data recovery service.

Finding a Data Recovery Company:

No matter what kind of file you have lost, there will surely be a data recovery company that you can turn to for help. Whether you need to retrieve a file that failed to save before your computer switched off or have a whole hard drive to recover from a broken gadget, professionals such as the guys at Technetics Data can help with data recovery in Sydney and beyond.

Today, it’s easier than ever to find data recovery services with a quick Google search; the main part is ensuring you choose a good one. One way to do this is by asking people that you trust for recommendations; your close friends and family won’t want you to be ripped off.

What to Consider:

Finding a suitable company to get your data back can be a trickier process than it seems. So, there are a few critical things for you to take into consideration when searching. Firstly, it’s important to make sure that you don’t base your decision on price alone; you really do get what you pay for when it comes to these types of services.

Some good companies even offer a ‘no data, no fee’ policy; this is a great option to go for as you can rest assured that you won’t be parting with any of your hard-earned cash unless the process is a success.

Secondly, the next thing you should take into consideration is the reputation of your potential data retriever. Ideally, you should opt for a company or individual with heaps of good reviews and loyal customers who openly trust them to do a good job.

Finally:

Although the option of hiring a data retrieval service is always there should the worst happen, there are some simple steps that you can take to prevent it.

For example, regularly saving your documents as you create them lessens the risk of all your work being lost if your computer were to suddenly restart. Additionally, you can utilise cloud solutions such as Google Docs, Sheets and Slides to create files that are automatically saved online as you go along.
