NYU strike falters?

Inside Higher Ed: A strike falters

Labor activists in New York City gathered last month to mark the 95th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, a tragedy that left 146 dead, and that spurred sweeping labor reforms. The delegation from New York University’s union of graduate students didn’t have to travel far. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory is now NYU’s biology building.

Those graduate students are currently creating union history of a different kind, as a strike by some graduate assistants, now in its 16th week, has failed so far to bring the university to the bargaining table. Clearly, change in this case will not come about in a single fiery flash. What’s unclear is whether today’s history is one of a union that overestimated its strength or of a victory that will be quite a while in coming. In the short term, NYU appears well on its way to returning private higher education to non-union status with regard to teaching assistants.

Those NYU graduate students who want a union have been embroiled in their own labor struggle since the summer, when NYU stopped recognizing the Graduate Student Organizing Committee, a local affiliate of the United Auto Workers, and the only official graduate assistant union at a private institution. The union won major improvements in wages and benefits during its four-year contract, but NYU says it will provide gains even without a union.

San Francisco: Teachers overwhelmingly back strike in first vote since ’79

Teachers overwhelmingly back strike in first vote since ’79
San Francisco Chronicle – CA, USA
San Francisco public school teachers overwhelmingly approved a walkout Wednesday night in the first strike vote taken by the group in 27 years.

The United Educators of San Francisco — which represents 6,000 teachers and aides working in the San Francisco Unified School District — voted 2,203 to 317 to strike.

The union has been working without a contract since July 2004. The teachers and aides last had a pay raise in the 2002-03 academic year.

The union declared it was at an impasse with the district last month. A state labor mediator was brought in, without success, and the union set the strike vote.

SF Teachers’ Union Votes To Approve Strike
abc7news.com – San Francisco,CA,USA
Teachers and staff with the United Educators of San Francisco voted tonight to authorize a strike if the district does not meet their demands.

Union President Dennis Kelly emerged from an evening meeting at which the strike authorization vote was held. “We had literally thousands of teachers turn out to vote on the authorization,” he said. The members voted “overwhelmingly” in favor of authorizing a strike.

According to the union’s vote results, 2,520 union members voted tonight on whether to authorize a strike. The authorization passed by a margin of 87.4 percent.

“We will go into the next round (of mediated negotiations) with this (vote) behind us to let the district know we are serious about fair pay and equal protection. We are ready to shut down the schools,” Kelly said.

District spokeswoman Lorna Ho said the district’s reaction was “one of incredible disappointment.”

Traffic was disrupted from early this morning on trains, planes, buses and the Paris Metro as unions heeded calls to observe a one-day strike against the law. School children enjoyed a free day as a majority of teachers stayed home, newsstands were empty due to a distribution strike, the main French radio network broadcast only music, mail was not delivered, some banks were closed, and most universities remained shut down as students prepared to march.

Prince Edward Island: UPEI student union starts “counterstrike” campaign

radio@upei: Let the Student Voice be Heard: Counterstrike Campaign

Considering the current situation at our university, the UPEI Student Union feels that it is time for students to start voicing their concerns. Talks have broken off between the UPEI Faculty Association and the UPEI administration and no more are scheduled. If talks do not resume and a settlement is not reached soon, our academic term may be in jeopardy.
Whatever compensation is eventually agreed upon can come from one of two sources; government funding, or increased tuition. We feel the provincial government is equally accountable for the current situation, as funding levels are 20% below what they were in the 1980’s.

Our voices need to be heard by all three.

Prince Edward Island: Premier considers back-to-work legislation to end UPEI faculty strike

The Guardian: Bill to end UPEI strike last resort, says Binns

Faculty association, students reject such a move and say more provincial funds would help bridge gap leading to current walkout.

Premier Pat Binns says back-to-work legislation would be a last resort, but his suggestion has already received a failing grade from both professors and students at UPEI.

Both the UPEI Faculty Association and the UPEI Student Union say forcing striking professors and librarians back to work is not the solution. UPEI’s more than 375 faculty association members have been off the job since Tuesday.

No talks were held Thursday and no new talks are planned.

Scotland: 80,0000 pupils hit schools shut by strike

Evening Times: A STRIKE by up to 250,000 Scots council workers on Tuesday will shut more than 400 schools in the Glasgow area and hit almost 80,000 kids

A STRIKE by up to 250,000 Scots council workers on Tuesday will shut more than 400 schools in the Glasgow area and hit almost 80,000 kids.

Every primary, nursery and special educational needs school in Glasgow will close, hitting 55,000 pupils.

In East Dunbartonshire, all schools, including secondaries, will shut, affecting 22,300 youngsters.
In other regions, council bosses are holding talks with union officials to avoid closing schools – but even if they open there will still be disruption for pupils.

The 24-hour strike is over pensions and the walkout will affect a wide range of council services.
