After almost 3 weeks of street protests and strikes during which security forces killed two protesters and beat and imprisoned hundreds more, Honduran teachers announced a “strategic retreat” on Monday April 4th.

The teachers, members of the 6 teachers colleges that make up the Federation of Honduran Teachers Organizations (FOMH), have been protesting the seizure of their pension fund and social security institute by the de facto regime of Porfirio Lobo, the destruction of the Teachers´Statute (the law that governs wages and working conditions for education workers), and the off-loading of responsibility for public education to municipal authorities.

NACLA: Student Strike in Puerto Rico Continues With Increasing International Support

Monday, May 24 marked the sixth week of a student strike at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) after protests at the main Río Piedras campus began on April 21. Students are protesting $100 million budget cuts, increases in tuition, and changes to the university program. While the student strike was intended to be only a 48 hour stoppage, the university administration was unwilling to negotiate with students, leading to an expansion and prolongation of the strike. The UPR administration shut down the university, which serves 65,000 students, after the April 21 protest at the main campus resulted in a confrontation with the police.

The UPR strike is one of several recent strikes on the island that is the result of the Puerto Rican government’s passing of Law 7 more than a year ago. The law gave the government power to make emergency financial decisions in response to the $3.2 billion state deficit. This year Governor Luis Fortuño’s government reduced the UPR’s budget in spite of the 1966 Puerto Rican law that guaranteed that 9.6 percent of the island’s general funds would be reserved for the university.

ALISO VIEJO – Capistrano Unified School District teachers, frustrated and angry over a 10.1 percent pay cut imposed on them by the school board, have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, union leaders announced Friday.
Nearly 87 percent of the 1,848 teachers who cast ballots over a two-day period ending Friday voted to give their union governing board the power to decide when, or if, they will walk off the job.

Abstract
In 2002, approximately two thirds of school teachers in the Canadian
province of Alberta went on strike. Drawing on media, government and union
documents, this case study reveals some contours of the political economy of
labor relations in education that are normally hidden from view. Among these
features are that the state can react to worker resistance by legally
pressuring trade unions and justifying this action as in the public
interest. This justification seeks to divide the working class and pit
segments of it against each other. The state may also seek to limit
discussion and settlements to monetary matters to avoid constraining its
ability to manage the workplace or the educational system. This analysis
provides a basis for developing a broader theory of the political economy of
labor relations in education. It also provides trade unionists in education
with information useful in formulating a strike strategy. Keywords: teachers

DUBLIN, Dec 1 (Reuters) – Irish trade unions have agreed to call off a fresh public sector strike on Thursday against planned spending cuts in next week’s budget for 2010, Prime Minister Brian Cowen said on Tuesday.

Up to 250,000 nurses, teachers and other public workers held a one-day strike last week over government plans to cut the public sector pay bill by 1.3 billion euros in the Dec. 9 budget and they had threatened a second day of action for Thursday.

Educational institutions throughout the country have remained closed Monday due a strike called by a Maoist teachers’ union.

The Unified CPN (Maoist) affiliated All Nepal Teachers Organisation (ANTO) has forcibly shut all schools in the country in line with the mother party’s policy to mobilise its sister organisations to make its third phase agitation a success.

UCPN (Maoist), agitating against an incident in May when the President had overruled the erstwhile Maoist-led government’s decision to fire the then army chief, had instructed its sister organisations to organise their own programmes sector-wise in support of the agitation.

Some six million students studying in about 10,000 community and institutional schools across the country have been deprived of their right to education today due to the strike.

Barring a major breakthrough with management, a union representing staff members at the City University of New York Research Foundation is likely to strike Tuesday for the first time in its more than 30-year history, negotiators say.

The foundation, a nonprofit organization that manages sponsored research at CUNY, has spent more than a year engaged in intense negotiations over salary and health care benefits with the Professional Staff Congress, a union affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers and the American Association of University Professors, among other labor groups. The union’s 85 members work in the foundation’s central office, where they handle payroll and the administration of state and federal grants.

As graduate teaching assistants formed picket lines on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus Monday, administrators tried to assuage concerns that the university is maneuvering to end tuition waivers.

The Graduate Employees Organization (GEO), a union affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, commenced a strike Monday after contract negotiations broke down over a single issue. The GEO, which represents about 2,700 student employees, agreed to strike when administrators rejected a demand for more robust protections of tuition waivers. The university put forward its own language on the issue, but GEO leaders said it fell short of ensuring that waivers for out of state students would be retained.

Many classrooms at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are sitting empty today as a result of a strike by graduate students who teach or do research.

About 1,000 graduate students employed by the university have signed up to picket academic buildings in shifts today, with about 500 on the lines at any one time, said Peter O. Campbell, a spokesman for the Graduate Employees Organization, which has about 2,600 members. Graduate students generally teach about 23 percent of all undergraduate course hours on the campus.

Graduate teaching assistants at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are planning to go on strike today, following the failure to complete a contract agreement. The union, affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, said that while many contract issues were resolved, the university would not offer assurances about the continuation of tuition waivers. “The administration’s refusal to guarantee the continuation of its current tuition waiver practice not only means that the majority of graduate employees could be forced to pay thousands of dollars in additional tuition charges, but also indicates its plans to implement such a change. By making graduate education untenable for all but the most affluent students, the administration is abandoning its responsibility to ensure access to the highest level of public education for all,” said a union statement. The university issued a statement in which it characterized the union’s interest in tuition waivers as new and not a subject over great disagreements. The union “has chosen to strike over an issue that historically has never been a source of contention between the union and management, and about which there is no indication would be a source of contention in the future,” said the university’s official statement. In turn, the union issued a new statement asking why, if the university was committed to the tuition waivers, it wouldn’t agree to add the desired language to the contract.

Graduate students who teach and do research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign plan to go on strike early Monday.

Weekend negotiations between the graduate students’ union and the university failed to produce a guarantee the union wants from administrators that the institution will continue tuition waivers, the Graduate Employees’ Organization said. Without such waivers, many graduate students may have to shoulder an increase in the cost of their education.

With the province’s 900 community college faculty and staff poised to strike Oct. 20, Premier Darrell Dexter pledged Friday to review a union proposal for binding arbitration.

‘Serious financial issues’ prompting local executive to vote for new administrator include debt topping $1-million, poor record-keeping

The union local that shut down York University in one of the longest strikes in Canadian campus history has been taken over by the national executive because of “serious financial issues,” including a ballooning debt pegged at more than $1-million and a failure to keep adequate records.

The York local, which represents 3,300 contract faculty and teaching and research assistants, was placed under the administration of the national wing of the Canadian Union of Public Employees last week at the request of the local’s executive. A forensic audit is planned, as well as an investigation into charges of intimidation and harassment of local members.

DICKINSON — Some Broome Community College students plan to voice displeasure with the school’s trustees Wednesday by skipping some classes.
