United Way Hot Dog Lunch Fundraiser – October 15th

Come out and support the United Way by participating in a hot dog lunch fundraiser on Wednesday, October 15th! Details as follows:

Time:

Location: Main Mall (right outside the Henry Angus Building)
Cost: $5 (includes a hot dog, pop and bag of chips) *Cash and debit welcome

United Way of the Lower Mainland (UWLM) is a non-profit organization that delivers more than 400 programs and services to members of Lower Mainland communities. The United Way focuses on prevention and addresses the underlying causes of critical social issues such as poverty, bullying and social isolation before they become crises. The University of British Columbia (Vancouver and Okanagan) has been the top contributor to United Way for many years. Sine 2009 UBC has consistently raised over $500,000 in support of the local community.

  • identify the project on which you want to work
  • brief rationale for why you would make a good fit for the particular project
  • your average marks so far in the program

*Negotiation Mania – Confirmed*

We are pleased to announce we are hosting Negotiation Mania day at the Fairmont Pan Pacific Hotel on Friday, November 14 at 8:30 – 5:30 pm. The day includes the following components:

  • AM Session: Barry Howard, Senior Career Consultant from TOOMBS Inc., an international recruitment and career planning firm, will speak to the ins and outs of effective salary negotiation, including role play time.
  • Lunch will be provided (afternoon guests also invited for lunch)
  • PM Session: We will be joined by volunteers from the business community – recruiters from recruiting agencies, hiring managers and HR directors. You will be assigned a time slot and have the opportunity to practice two different types of scenarios (pitch and negotiation) with our volunteers. This has been a signature, high value event over the last several years.
  • You will also have time in the afternoon to schedule your own meetings. (Your afternoon slot will be confirmed by Nov.10)

October 14 – 17: BA 508 IPD Capstone Course – Business In Society Program

Following up on last week’s post, below is some additional information regarding the IPD Capstone Course – Business in Society Program.

IPD Capstone is an academic requirement of the UBC MBA degree. This course is purely academic; it is not part of the BCC professional development offerings.

Full-time MBA students in Vancouver have been registered in BA 508 IPD Capstone – a required 2-credit module. This module is comprised of two required academic parts as outlined below:

  1. October 14 – 17: IPD – Business in Society
  2. December 8 – 10: IPD – Capstone Course

Last week, registered students should have received an email from the faculty members outlining Business in Society’s activities, topics, deliverables, schedule and location. Information is on the BA 508 Connect site.

BCC Networking Event

Also scheduled during this week, on Wednesday, October 15th from 5:30 – 7:30pm, is a Networking Event. Please RSVP on COOL.

October 20 – 24: Job Search Week

October 20 – 24 is designated as job search week. There is no programming scheduled during job search week. The intent of this week is to provide time for you to make investments in professional development and networking.

OTSW Early Bird Extended!!

Considering that students are currently under a lot of exam stress and pressure, the OTSW committee has extended early bird pricing until Friday, October 10th.  Register today @ www.otsw.ca to take advantage of the low price of $30.

What is OTSW?

12 different technologies developed on UBC campus have been collected and made available for UBC students.  These technologies are waiting to be commercialized by enthusiastic entrepreneurs.  Over the course of a weekend, students will be placed in teams of 6 based on common technology interests.  Teams are to formulate business plans and create pitches that will be presented to a panel of judges.  There is opportunity to use these technologies in future course work or even continue commercialization out of personal interest.

Please come prepared with a copy of your track worksheet filled out to expedite the process. Track worksheets are located from the current student website at http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/Programs/MBA/MBA_Full_Time/Current_Students or here below. Please be reminded you will need to successfully complete 50 credits in total in order to graduate in the full-time MBA program. It is crucial that your P7 registration qualifies you to graduate and the fulfills the requirements for the track of your choice.


For your information, BAAC 521 001 – Taxation and Decision Making has been cancelled in P7 due to low enrolment.

A scholarship of $10,000 has been established for a student in the full-time MBA program at the Sauder School of Business.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest and leadership in corporate social responsibility, business ethics and/or sustainability.
  • Good academic standing.
