Update: MBA Experiential Course Requirement

In consultation with your Track Champions, we have updated the Experiential Course requirements to reflect an updated assignment at the end of your summer experience period.  Students will now need to submit a Final Report (10-15 pages) to their faculty supervisors by September 12, 2014 instead of conducting a presentation to faculty.

Below are updated documents to reflect this change.  If you have submitted your internship paperwork to the BCC, you do NOT need to re-submit your paperwork again (just take note of this new requirement and deadline).  MBA students will need to touch base with their faculty supervisor to determine the format and vision for this final report as it will count towards your final grade.

A friendly reminder for those of you who have secured an internship, entrepreneurial or industry project – please submit your completed documents (MBA Internship/ Project agreements & Confidentiality forms) to Carly Boettcher, Graduate Careers Assistant by Friday, June 13, 2014.

Updated Documents:

2014 MBA Internship Agreement Form

2014 MBA Entrepreneurial Project Agreement Form

Confidentiality Agreement

Trek Calgary – Applications due May 29

Trek Calgary Application Update:  Additional Day added….

Application Deadline: May 29th    Dates: August 25th, 26th & 27th

Trek Calgary is being organized for the end of August this year rather than November. As you know, Calgary (and Edmonton) are growing, vibrant markets and Calgary has a large corporate HQ component. This is an excellent opportunity to:

  • Set-up your own meetings (on days without required programming scheduled and during available time slots during  25th, 26th & 27th)
  • Meet alumni (growing and involved Sauder contingent in Alberta)
  • Meet companies
  • And experience that market

The Trek will include company meetings, an alumni networking event, information about the Calgary market, and time for you to pursue your own meetings with connections you uncover and those we help facilitate.

It is important that we get commitment from students as our ability to secure meetings with companies is predicated on having students committed (and companies typically book the calendars of 2-10 senior people to host Sauder for a Trek visit). Please apply no later than May 29th for Trek Calgary. Ideally, please apply as early as you are able – (internship/summer experience secured and dates figured out).

For your application, please send a cover letter to ian.christie@sauder.ubc.ca covering the following points:

  • Why are you interested in Alberta
  • What kinds of companies are you interested in exploring/meeting
  • What will you do to secure your own connections in advance of Trek to make the most of the trip
  • Your commitment that you will attend if accepted

Please note: If you apply, you are committing to attending.

Negotiating Your Schedule: At the beginning of your summer experience, if you are negotiating with companies, be sure to try and arrange for your internship to complete by August 22 (assuming this allows for the 8 week minimum of FT work). If you have already agreed on dates and they conflict with your interest in attending Trek, you can ask your employer if there is some flexibility.

Expenses: You will be responsible for your own travel and accommodation expenses. A hotel rate will be negotiated. However, you are free to stay where you like, as long as commit to being on time for the itinerary. The BCC will provide you a $300 stipend after the Trek to partially offset your costs.

Looking forward to having you on this worthwhile and fun trip!

Internship/Entrepreneurial Projects: Important Reminders

A few reminders as we all get back into the routine of either internship search, or paperwork required for those of you who have secured offers or plan on entrepreneurial projects.

Scheduling Interviews:  For many this is a time of year for interviewing and we just wanted to remind you to try and schedule interviews around your class schedule. We respect sometimes it is difficult, but do your best not to ask professors for time off. Often employers can be flexible when you let them know you have a class in the same window.

Accepting Offers:  For some of you, there may be two offers pending and we want to remind you about the importance of understanding that if you accept a verbal offer, you are no longer in the running for future opportunities. We are happy to help you navigate the acceptance of an internship, and help with communication around leaving a door open with an employer for permanent opportunities when you are placed for the summer. (Please communicate with us when you have tough questions to consider).

Paperwork Reminder: For all of you seeking or have secured an internship or entrepreneurial project, there is mandatory paper work required. All students must be assigned to faculty and faculty must be aware of your intentions and we manage that piece, given it’s for credit. If you are not sure what to do first, check in with your career coach or Carly Boettcher to find out what needs to be signed off. All the paperwork is found on Connect -> MyMBA Career– under the tab labelled “Summer Experience”.

Summer Work Visa (International Students):  Finally, many of you need a visa, or co-op work permit to work in the summer and we manage that as well. Once you have your Co-op permit and SIN Card information, please communicate with Carly Boettcher so she knows you are accounted for.
