PROVINCE, LIBRARIES LAUNCH VIRTUAL REFERENCE SERVICE

VICTORIA – British Columbians will have better access to more information thanks to a new virtual reference library service called AskAway, Education Minister Shirley Bond and Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell announced today during the Libraries in Dialogue with Government conference.

    A great idea, but haven’t reference librarians in China been doing this already, Jing? Though their collaborative service is based on email rather than realtime chatting. And will copyright issues no longer be a problem if databases are “co-browsed” by people from different institutions in BC?

    Yes, for years. Realtime chatting too, for two years. Reference answers are sent to users’ cell phones as well. Good question, I vaguely remember that the licenses have to be re-negotiated. I will confirm this with the authority. Jan at Lam would have clear idea. I couldn’t agree more with Chairman Mao on this.
