With modern technology, we have seen the arrival of many portable and wearable devices that can monitor our lifestyle. These include wrist bands that measures daily activities and heart rate to watches that can trace your golf swing to shoes that can count your steps. It is not surprising that there are now clothes that can monitor your heart rate, breathing rate and even muscle activity.
Athos has developed this type of clothing which is due to be out in fall 2015 thanks to electromyography (EMG). According to Athos’ website, their garment together with the core unit can measure muscle effort, record muscle target zones and detecting muscle fatigue besides measuring heart rate and breathing patterns. This new technology could be hugely beneficial to athletes and the general public to create more efficient training and also avoiding bad training and over training.

Another company called Radiate Athletics has developed T-shirts that can show the muscle groups that have been active during a workout. The Radiate clothes use a Thermal-Vision technology. The shirt can change colour as your muscle groups heat up during exercise to reflect the muscle group that you have being working on and also the intensity of the workout. This technology does not require the use of batteries or any apps on smartphones making it a much more affordable and easier way to track your workout.

What could these technologies mean? As we are more and more aware of the benefits from an active lifestyle these devices that could be worn daily could make excersing more interesting and trackable. People can see if they are actually workingout during a session or their poor technic is affecting the quality of trainning. We can now take a day off when we see our muscles need rest without feeling guilty. These devices could enhance our everyday life in a great way.
